BitGo Launches Public Bitcoin Quantum Risk Checker | Bankless

BitGo launched a free tool that scores Bitcoin addresses for quantum risk based on whether their public keys have been exposed.

Yesterday, BitGo launched a free public tool letting anyone check how exposed their Bitcoin may be to future quantum attacks by entering their wallet addresses.

  • Check Your Bitcoin: BitGo’s Quantum Resistance Score lets users enter one or multiple Bitcoin addresses and see what percentage of their BTC sits in addresses with exposed versus unexposed public keys. The checker uses only public onchain data, requires no account or wallet connection, and does not save submitted addresses.
  • Why Exposure Matters: For many Bitcoin address types, a public key is revealed onchain when funds are spent from the address. While that poses no current threat, quantum could theoretically derive a private key from an exposed public key, potentially allowing an attacker to drain the funds.
  • Preparing for Quantum: The public checker expands on quantum-risk tools BitGo rolled out for institutional clients in July, including continuous wallet scoring and a workflow that moves funds from exposed addresses into newly generated ones. These are just hygiene tools though. Bitcoin itself still needs to migrate to post-quantum cryptography.
