  • Nine firms pledge $15 million over three years to Bitcoin security research.
  • Consortium funds post-quantum cryptography work, doesn’t control Bitcoin’s protocol.
  • Brink’s Mike Schmidt will coordinate the group’s day-to-day operations.

BlackRock, Strategy, Coinbase, Fidelity Digital Assets and five other firms have pledged $15 million over three years to fund Bitcoin security research, launching Bitcoin Security Consortium (BSC), one of the first coordinated industry efforts to support the open-source developers who maintain the network.

Announced on July 23, 2026, the consortium brings together Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, BlackRock, Block, Blockstream, Coinbase, Fidelity Digital Assets, Galaxy, and Strategy.

The initiative aims to fund developers and researchers working on Bitcoin’s long-term security, with a particular focus on post-quantum cryptography.

The launch comes as asset managers, custodians and corporate treasury firms collectively oversee tens of billions of dollars in Bitcoin exposure through ETFs, custody businesses and corporate holdings.

The consortium represents a new mechanism for those stakeholders to support the infrastructure underpinning the network.

Why Was the Bitcoin Security Consortium Created?

The Bitcoin Security Consortium was created to provide sustained support for the developers and researchers responsible for maintaining Bitcoin’s security infrastructure.

According to the announcement, participating organizations will fund developers and researchers independently rather than contribute to a centralized fund.

The BSC is modeled after similar industry-backed initiatives that support critical open-source software without exerting control over development decisions.

The group emphasized that it does not govern Bitcoin, represent Bitcoin developers, or advocate for protocol upgrades. Instead, it seeks to help coordinate funding and provide a reliable source of information on Bitcoin security issues for investors, policymakers, media outlets, and the public.

Day-to-day operations will be coordinated by Mike Schmidt of Brink, a nonprofit organization that has become one of the leading sources of funding and education for Bitcoin developers.

The consortium also aims to become a public-facing source of information on Bitcoin security. The group said it intends to provide investors, media organizations and policymakers with fact-based updates on topics such as quantum computing, an area that has often generated conflicting claims and speculation within the crypto industry.

Why Is Post-Quantum Cryptography a Priority?

The consortium identified post-quantum cryptography as a key focus area, reflecting growing industry attention on how Bitcoin could eventually adapt if future quantum computers become capable of breaking today’s cryptographic standards.

Bitcoin currently relies on Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) cryptography.

While today’s quantum computers are far from capable of breaking Bitcoin’s cryptographic protections, sufficiently advanced quantum systems could theoretically compromise existing signature schemes in the future.

Security researchers generally view a transition to quantum-resistant cryptography as one of the most complex upgrades Bitcoin could face. Such a transition would involve extensive research, testing, developer coordination, and community consensus.

How Does This Change Bitcoin Development Funding?

Bitcoin’s core development has historically been funded through nonprofits such as Brink and Chaincode Labs, as well as grants from individual companies, rather than coordinated support from large institutional holders.

The Bitcoin Security Consortium creates a coordinated mechanism through which institutions with substantial Bitcoin exposure can contribute to the ecosystem’s security.

BlackRock, Fidelity, and Strategy alone oversee tens of billions of dollars in Bitcoin-related assets through ETFs, custody products, and treasury holdings.

On the Flipside

  • Bitcoin developers have not universally agreed on how a future transition to post-quantum cryptography should be implemented.
  • The timeline for a quantum threat remains uncertain, making it difficult to assess how much funding should be directed toward mitigation today.

Why This Matters

The launch of the Bitcoin Security Consortium marks one of the first coordinated efforts by major financial institutions and Bitcoin companies to directly support Bitcoin’s security infrastructure.
