Study shows ChatGPT enhances student work quality, while critical thinking training fosters originality. Combined, they yield complementary benefits.

ChatGPT and Critical Thinking Training Boost Student Performance

A new study involving over 1,000 first-year university students has revealed how ChatGPT and critical-thinking training can complement each other to enhance student performance. Conducted by researchers at Bocconi University in collaboration with OpenAI Economic Research, the randomized experiment demonstrated that AI access improved the quality and coherence of student work, while causal reasoning exercises fostered originality and deeper idea exploration.

The study asked students to develop marketing strategies for Bocconi University’s merchandise store. Participants were divided into four groups: those with access to ChatGPT, those receiving critical-thinking training, those with both, and a control group with neither. The results showed that students using ChatGPT scored nearly a full point higher on a standardized five-point rubric. Their submissions contained more ideas, followed clearer logic, and closely resembled expert-level recommendations.

Interestingly, students who underwent critical-thinking training performed differently. Although they didn’t score higher on the rubric, their work exhibited a wider variety of unique ideas. The training focused on causal reasoning—linking cause and effect and evaluating why solutions might succeed or fail. This approach encouraged students to question assumptions, which traditional scoring rubrics often fail to capture.

AI and Critical Thinking: Complementary Strengths

For students who received both ChatGPT access and critical-thinking training, the combined benefits were evident. Their work mirrored the idea variety achieved by students in the training-only group while also maintaining the polished structure and coherence typical of ChatGPT-supported submissions. This suggests that generative AI tools like ChatGPT, when paired with structured critical-thinking exercises, can address different facets of educational development.

This finding aligns with broader research trends. A 2026 meta-analysis in Humanities and Social Sciences Communications noted that while ChatGPT can improve learning outcomes, its impact is contingent on thoughtful implementation. OpenAI’s introduction of the Study Mode feature in 2025 similarly aimed to make ChatGPT function more as a tutor, emphasizing interactive learning rather than merely providing answers.

Implications for Education Policy

The study underscores the need for schools to rethink traditional assessments. If AI tools enable students to produce polished, expert-like work, educators must adapt evaluation methods to measure originality, reasoning, and creative problem-solving. UNESCO has emphasized that generative AI in education should be implemented with age-appropriate, human-centered policies and teacher training to maximize its potential while addressing risks like overreliance and academic misconduct.

As AI increasingly integrates into classrooms, educators face the challenge of balancing the benefits of technology with the need to foster independent critical thinking. This experiment highlights that the debate shouldn’t center on whether to ban or embrace AI outright, but rather how tools like ChatGPT can be integrated effectively to complement human skill development.

The takeaway: ChatGPT helps students produce polished, coherent work, while critical-thinking training fosters originality and deeper reasoning. Together, they offer a pathway to more holistic educational outcomes.
