Citadel Securities used Fireblocks to test DTCC’s tokenization service, a key step toward the initiative’s full launch in October 2026.
On July 15, Citadel Securities, one of the largest market makers globally, participated in a live test of DTCC’s upcoming Tokenization Service. The initiative, facilitated by Fireblocks, demonstrated the viability of converting U.S. Treasury securities into tokenized assets on the Canton Network. This marks a significant step in DTCC’s plan to launch the service in October 2026.
DTCC’s tokenization project aims to bring blockchain-based efficiencies to traditional market infrastructure. By leveraging Fireblocks’ digital asset platform, Citadel Securities was able to tokenize U.S. Treasuries, transfer them to counterparties like BNP Paribas and Société Générale, and use them as collateral on the CME. The ability to move tokenized assets seamlessly between participants underscores the potential for improved capital efficiency, faster settlement times, and reduced operational costs.
Why This Matters
The DTCC Tokenization Service is designed to enhance asset mobility in regulated markets. By enabling securities held at DTC to be represented on a distributed ledger, DTCC aims to preserve traditional investor protections while unlocking benefits like 24/7 transferability and real-time collateral mobility. The initiative has garnered input from over 50 financial firms since its announcement in May 2026, with early tests showing promise for reducing liquidity buffers and lowering capital requirements.
For Citadel Securities, the July 15 test was as much about validating blockchain technology at scale as it was about operational readiness. Dan Doherty at Citadel praised Fireblocks for simplifying the process, from wallet onboarding to daily reporting of tokenized balances. The infrastructure ensured compliance with internal risk policies and provided a secure environment for token transfers.
Fireblocks’ Role
Fireblocks played a critical part in enabling Citadel’s participation. Its infrastructure provided the tools for creating and transferring tokenized assets securely, including validator node access to the Canton Network and interfaces for onboarding with DTCC. The platform also offered fine-grained governance features to meet institutional risk requirements.
This isn’t Fireblocks’ first foray into supporting regulated finance on the Canton Network. Earlier in 2026, the company extended its capabilities to support custody and native token transfers, aligning with DTCC’s long-term vision of bridging traditional and blockchain markets.
What’s Next
DTCC plans to launch the Tokenization Service as a voluntary offering in October 2026, initially supporting U.S. Treasury securities, securities in the Russell 1000 Index, and major market ETFs. The service is expected to expand to additional blockchains like Stellar, depending on client demand and regulatory approval.
Citadel Securities’ successful test positions it as a leading participant in this new era of tokenized finance. For other institutions, the results highlight the importance of choosing scalable and compliant infrastructure partners like Fireblocks as they look to integrate digital assets into their broader strategies.
