Key Takeaways:
- Monetization Gateway is an extension of Cloudflare launched with stablecoin payments through x402.
- Customer charges for APIs, datasets, web pages, and AI products.
- The system enables instant, low-cost micropayments without user accounts.
Cloudflare is bringing stablecoins deeper into internet infrastructure with the launch of its new Monetization Gateway. The platform allows businesses to monetize virtually any digital resource protected by Cloudflare while using stablecoins and the x402 protocol to settle payments in near real time.
Cloudflare Brings Stablecoin Payments to the Internet Edge
The Monetization Gateway is designed to let Cloudflare customers charge for protected assets such as APIs, datasets, websites, Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools, and other digital services. Instead of building custom billing systems, developers can define payment rules while Cloudflare handles payment verification and enforcement across its global edge network.
At launch, payments will settle in stablecoins through x402, an open payment protocol developed by the x402 Foundation alongside more than 25 industry participants.
A simple payment flow is provided in the system. If a client requests access to a protected resource, the server may reply with pricing information in the form of a protected resource, a HTTP 402 Payment Required message. Once paid, request is automatically retried with proof of payment and access will be possible without redirects, checkout pages, and payment gateways.

Built for AI Agents and Machine-to-Machine Commerce
Cloudflare believes that the internet is evolving its business model, with AI agents replacing human users on the web. Advertising, subscriptions, and API keys to monetize traditional methods are ill suited to a self-contained software alone making thousands of tiny requests per day.
The answer lies in the stablecoins and how they enable low-value transactions without imperfect terms: little fees, no days to settle, a few seconds.

Usage-Based Pricing Without Payment Infrastructure
The Monetization Gateway enables companies to build flexible payment policies, without any need for a company to own a payment bill up platform.
Developers can specify rules like requiring certain charges for selected API endpoints, price rules based on compute usage, and payments will only be requested from non-authenticated users. All these policies are available to be managed in Cloudflare’s dashboard, API or via infrastructure-as-code format tools like Terraform.
Importantly, payment verification occurs at the Cloudflare edge network, serving more than 330 cities, thus adding less latency while protecting origin servers from a high volume of payment traffic.
Stablecoins Become Native Internet Payment Rails
The launch of Cloudflare signals the expanding use of stablecoins beyond crypto trading. The company doesn’t just consider them to be digital dollars, though; the firm interprets them as settlement facilities for the more and more autonomous internet software application.
The model provides sellers with stablecoins right into their wallets and they are in a position to use the identical stablecoins for blockchain transactions or the cash change them for fiat money.
Cloudflare is also betting on stablecoin-based micropayments as a base for machine-to-machine commerce, in which software can trigger conventional web requests and provide it with data, computing power, APIs, and digital services without human involvement.
