Coinbase now allows Mainland China users to register with national ID cards and local addresses, making account verification easier.
Coinbase has reportedly opened account registration for users in Mainland China. The update was released on July 14th, following the successful registration of a number of users on social media. Later, the report says that users can now use a Chinese national ID card and a Mainland China residential address to verify their identity.
Coinbase Makes Registration Easier for Mainland China Users
The most significant change is the Know Your Customer (KYC) procedure at Coinbase. Now, users can use a Chinese national ID card to complete the identity verification process. They also must give their Mainland China address for residence. In the past, Coinbase had asked for a Chinese passport and a verified Hong Kong address.

Consequently, the registration process has been greatly simplified. There are also local reports that verification can be done in as little as 1 minute. The processing time may be different, however, depending on compliance checks and document reviews.

Previously, it was difficult for many Chinese users to open Coinbase accounts. They required documents that many people were not in possession of. So, the old requirements were restricting many potential users.
Now those additional requirements have been eliminated. Users are able to register using widely available identity documents. But all applicants have to go through Coinbase’s identity verification process before they can use the platform’s services.
The update was first spotted in a few social media posts. Shortly after, Wu Blockchain stated that its staff confirmed the change at Coinbase. The report says that Chinese national ID cards and addresses in Mainland China are now accepted during registration.
China Still Maintains Strict Crypto Trading Rules
Registration is now open, but China’s cryptocurrency regulations remain unchanged. Direct trading between the Chinese yuan (RMB) and cryptocurrencies on public exchanges is still banned in the Mainland. So, users should not expect to be able to purchase crypto easily using their local bank accounts.
The update, however, primarily impacts account creation and identity verification. Coinbase now makes it easier for users to open accounts. They are still required to abide by local laws and Coinbase’s compliance guidelines.
In the interim, the transfer may enable Coinbase to reach more users. China is home to one of the world’s largest online populations. Easier registration may encourage more people to access Coinbase’s supported products where legally available.
Meanwhile, Coinbase hasn’t said if this is a permanent change or not. The company has also not clarified whether the update is a worldwide change or a change in its operations. Hence, there is a need for more clarity for many market participants.
According to Coinbase’s official help page, identity verification is necessary to comply with legal and compliance requirements. The company’s identity verification depends on the user’s country or region. This process also helps enhance account security and prevent fraud.
The registration update is a significant milestone for Coinbase users in Mainland China, for now. The simplified verification process may make it easier for more potential users to register in the future, even though overall restrictions on cryptocurrencies in China remain in effect.
