Key Takeaways

Coinbase Brings Major US Stocks Onchain

Eligible investors outside the United States gained onchain access to tokenized shares in several major U.S. companies on Aug. 24. Crypto exchange Coinbase (Nasdaq: COIN) issued the securities on Base using the B20 token standard. The tokenized stocks are backed 1:1 by underlying shares held through a regulated custodian in a bankruptcy-remote structure.

The launch includes fractional shares tied to Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL), Nvidia Corp. (Nasdaq: NVDA), Meta Platforms Inc. (Nasdaq: META), and Alphabet Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOGL). Coinbase had previously outlined plans for tokenized stocks with automatic dividends and no synthetic exposure in June. The tokens can be held in self-custody wallets and transferred across supported Base applications.

Chainlink Supplies Continuous Stock Pricing

Continuous pricing from Chainlink allows decentralized exchanges, lending markets, and structured-product platforms to evaluate the tokenized securities outside traditional market hours. Coinbase selected Chainlink as its official oracle infrastructure for products including AAPLc, GOOGLc, METAc, and NVDAc. Oracles deliver external financial data to blockchain applications that cannot retrieve it independently.

Chainlink Labs Chief Business Officer Johann Eid stated:

“Tokenized assets only reach their full potential when the broader ecosystem can build with them across DeFi.”

The products enter a growing sector in which tokenized-stock value and transfer volume have expanded. Reliable pricing can support collateral calculations, liquidations, swaps, and portfolio valuation across applications operating continuously.

Abu Dhabi Framework Supports the Offering

Coinbase established its international tokenization hub after receiving Financial Services Permission from the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Abu Dhabi Global Market. The Abu Dhabi approval permits tokenized-securities activities, including arranging investment transactions and providing custody services. Coinbase Tokenized Stocks are offered under Regulation S and remain unavailable to people in the United States and other restricted jurisdictions.

Underlying shares are held through a regulated structure, while tokenholders receive rights defined by the applicable offering documents. Earlier examination of the Coinbase Abu Dhabi tokenization structure found that dividends, voting rights, and redemption eligibility can depend on prospectus terms and vesting conditions. Primary minting and redemption are limited to approved institutional participants that complete identity checks.

B20 Tokens Extend Stocks Into DeFi

Tokenized equities remain traditional securities even when ownership claims move through blockchain tokens and self-custody wallets. The legal structure behind real-world asset tokens determines the holder’s enforceable rights, custody protections, transfer restrictions, and redemption options. Blockchain availability does not remove issuer, custodian, liquidity, smart-contract, or jurisdictional risks.

Once issued, B20 tokens can interact with compatible wallets, decentralized exchanges, and lending protocols on Base. Dividends and stock splits are reflected through an onchain multiplier intended to prevent corporate actions from disrupting DeFi positions. Other Base-based initiatives have pursued similar access, including an arrangement offering more than 300 tokenized U.S. equities and exchange-traded funds. Base said more Coinbase tokenized stocks are expected over the coming weeks.
