CoinMarketCap has acquired Coinglass, a crypto derivatives data platform, the company announced Friday. The deal has already closed. Financial terms were not disclosed.

CoinMarketCap is widely used as a price tracking website for cryptocurrencies. It says 115 million people visit the platform each month to check prices and market data.

Coinglass focuses on a different part of the crypto market. It tracks derivatives data such as open interest, funding rates, liquidations and options.

What Coinglass Brings to CoinMarketCap

Coinglass was founded in 2019. It covers 28 exchanges and more than 2,500 trading instruments.

The platform serves over 5 million monthly users. It also has more than 10,000 API customers who pull its data directly into their own tools.

Coinglass built tools like a liquidation heatmap and open interest dashboards. These charts are often shared across crypto trading communities online.

Derivatives trading makes up most of the total volume in crypto markets. This means the data Coinglass tracks reflects where much of the market’s activity and risk actually happens.

By adding Coinglass, CoinMarketCap users will be able to see derivatives positioning data next to the prices they already check. This includes where liquidations are clustering and how funding rates are shifting.

Rush, the Chief Executive Officer of CoinMarketCap, commented on the deal. He said Coinglass built its reputation by focusing on one thing and doing it well.

He added that CoinMarketCap’s goal is to make that same data available to a larger audience. He said the company does not plan to change how Coinglass operates.

David Salamon, Chief Product Officer at CoinMarketCap, also spoke about the acquisition. He said open interest, funding and liquidations show where risk is actually taken in the market.

No Changes Expected for Coinglass Users

Coinglass confirmed it will continue to operate under its own brand. The company said its website, app, free tools, API and pricing will all stay the same.

The Coinglass team will remain in place following the deal. The company said it will keep building the product its users rely on daily.

This acquisition adds to CoinMarketCap’s ownership history. Binance, a major crypto exchange, acquired CoinMarketCap back in April 2020.

At that time, Binance said CoinMarketCap would continue operating independently. Binance also said it would have no influence over how the platform ranks cryptocurrencies.

CoinMarketCap has not said whether Coinglass data will be integrated directly into its main price pages. For now, the two platforms will continue running as separate products under the same parent company.
