Recent business collapses of exchanges, including BitMEX and BitMart, have brought speculation about whether such crashes could trigger the next crypto bull cycle or renewed market slump. Data shared today by market analyst Crypto Rover pointed out Binance founder’s reaction to people’s thinking that exchanges’ downfall could mark the beginning of a new booming market.

Last week on Thursday, BitMEX shocked the world when it announced the upcoming shutdown of its renowned crypto exchange. Three days later, BitMart also revealed that it’s winding down its crypto business. On Sunday, BitMart advised its customers to terminate all their crypto trading activities by next month, August 26, and will eventually cease all its business on January 31, 2027. The disturbing announcement came after AscendEX also halted its digital asset operation early this month due to MiCA license issues.

Crypto Leaders’ Statements on Exchange Collapses

Various crypto market leaders have shared their thoughts on recent centralized crypto platforms shutting their operations. Following the demise of BitMart on Sunday, Tom Lee, the founder of digital asset management company Fundstrat Capital, attributed recent exchange shutdowns to the ongoing market downturn. In his X account, the executive stated that such events typically occur when crypto asset prices are at their bottom.

Also, Changpeng Zhao (CZ), the founder of Binance exchange, stated in his X post that the current business closure circumstances could have been triggered by the bear market. He admitted that difficult times have returned, but described the situation as organized business closures, with clients given time to cash out their assets.

He warned, however, that acquisitions of smaller crypto exchanges are more complex than purchasing other types of enterprises, stating that hidden cybersecurity risks or security vulnerabilities within platform operating systems (unattended by the outgoing teams) could enable infiltration after buyouts are completed. He stated that while such business arrangements remain possible, they require a more cautious approach, citing the recent shutdowns of BitMEX and BitMart.

What’s Next for Crypto Market?

Also, market analyst StarPlatinum shared his sentiment, noting that the recent shutdowns of BitMEX and BitMart could signal the start of a wider collapse of more centralized exchanges.

He cited the continuing crypto downturn, weakening interest among retail investors in altcoins, decreased futures trading volumes, stringent laws, and rising business operating expenses as potential drivers. He, however, stated that 2026’s crypto market rebound is not dead, as it is still waiting for a trigger to spark the next bull run.
