TLDR
- The crypto PAC Fairshake invested more than $2 million in a failed attempt to prevent Democrat Oliver Gilbert from winning Florida’s 24th district primary
- Despite facing aggressive attack ads featuring fabricated Miami Herald headlines, Gilbert secured victory with 34.4% of votes
- Candidates supported by Fairshake emerged victorious in four separate contests spanning Florida, Alaska, and Wyoming on Tuesday
- The PAC’s cumulative success rate in congressional primaries now reaches 49 victories across 53 total contests
- Congressional composition following these races may influence the trajectory of the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act
Fairshake, the cryptocurrency sector’s most prominent political action committee, experienced a split outcome during Tuesday’s primary contests, securing victories in four races while unsuccessfully attempting to derail a candidate against whom it deployed substantial resources.
Significant Setback in Florida Contest
Through its affiliated organization Protect Progress, Fairshake allocated upwards of $2 million toward negative advertising campaigns targeting Oliver Gilbert, the Democratic contender seeking Florida’s 24th congressional district seat. Despite this substantial opposition, Gilbert prevailed by capturing 34.4% of votes in a multi-candidate contest that also featured Shevrin Jones and Kendrick Meek.
Throughout his campaign, Gilbert maintained vocal opposition to the cryptocurrency sector. He characterized the organizations funding the negative advertisements as “crypto con artists trying to buy a Democratic primary.”
The advertising campaign sparked significant backlash due to its use of fabricated Miami Herald headlines that inaccurately portrayed Gilbert’s policy stances. The newspaper publicly stated that these mock headlines twisted its actual reporting.
Protect Progress stood behind its advertising strategy. A representative from the organization asserted that “the underlying facts in our ad are true,” notwithstanding the Herald’s formal complaint.
Given the strong Democratic lean of the 24th district, political analysts anticipate Gilbert will prevail in November’s general election. His victory would place a vocal cryptocurrency skeptic in the halls of Congress.
Victories Secured in Multiple States
Beyond the Gilbert contest, Fairshake experienced considerable success. The PAC and its related organizations deployed approximately $3.6 million throughout Florida, Alaska, and Wyoming races.
In Florida, Democrat Lois Frankel claimed victory in her primary following over $150,000 in expenditures from Protect Progress supporting her candidacy.
Republican Sydney Gruters secured the nomination for Florida’s 16th district with PAC backing. Meanwhile in Wyoming, Republican Harriet Hageman decisively won her Senate primary contest. She’s competing for the position currently held by cryptocurrency supporter Senator Cynthia Lummis.
In Alaska’s at-large congressional district, Republican Nick Begich appears positioned to move forward in his race.
These four successful outcomes elevate Fairshake’s cumulative primary performance to 49 victories from 53 electoral contests.
Looking Ahead
Fairshake commenced the 2026 electoral cycle controlling a substantial $193 million reserve. By June, the organization had deployed more than $82 million across various races. During the 2024 cycle, the PAC expended over $130 million backing candidates favorable to cryptocurrency interests.
These electoral outcomes carry implications extending beyond individual contests. The US Senate is scheduled to consider the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act following its September return from recess. The legislation achieved House passage with cross-party backing in July 2025 through a 294-134 vote, though Senate Democrats continue advocating for enhanced ethics requirements connected to the Trump family’s cryptocurrency activities.
Any transformation in congressional power dynamics resulting from November’s midterm elections could prove decisive in determining whether this legislation advances or remains stagnant through 2027.
