Meanwhile, IBM said the acquisition will strengthen its long-term quantum computing strategy through expanded research capabilities.

IBM Expands Quantum Research Through HRL Acquisition
IBM signed a definitive agreement to acquire HRL Laboratories, a private research and development company. Boeing and General Motors jointly own HRL and will continue collaborating with IBM after the transaction. IBM did not disclose the financial terms of the acquisition.
The transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. IBM expects to complete the acquisition before the end of the third quarter of 2026. Meanwhile, HRL will become part of IBM’s expanding quantum technology business.
HRL specializes in silicon-spin qubit engineering and advanced quantum technologies. Therefore, IBM plans to combine that expertise with its existing superconducting qubit research. The combination aims to strengthen future quantum computing platforms and related infrastructure.
HRL Adds New Capabilities Across Quantum Technologies
IBM plans to use HRL’s technology to advance quantum sensing and quantum networking research. HRL brings experience in cryogenics, control electronics, qubit packaging and interconnect technologies. These capabilities support the development of larger and more capable quantum systems.
The acquisition also expands IBM’s work in advanced quantum materials. Those materials could improve semiconductor performance and increase sensor sensitivity across multiple industries. As a result, IBM expects broader applications in healthcare, navigation, defense, and scientific research.
Beyond quantum technologies, HRL contributes expertise in advanced manufacturing and communications systems. The company also develops high-speed electronics and materials for commercial and government programs. Consequently, IBM expects these capabilities to strengthen next-generation computing and mission-critical technologies.
IBM Advances Long-Term Quantum Computing Roadmap
IBM continues developing superconducting qubit-based quantum computers through its long-term technology roadmap. The company plans to introduce IBM Quantum Starling by 2029. IBM projects the system will perform 100 million quantum operations and exceed current quantum systems by a significant margin.
After Starling, IBM plans to introduce the Blue Jay quantum computer during the mid-2030s. The company expects Blue Jay to support one billion quantum operations. HRL’s silicon-spin qubit research may provide additional scaling opportunities for future systems.
IBM also expanded its quantum manufacturing strategy earlier this year. In May 2026, the company announced Anderon, a dedicated quantum wafer foundry supported by the U.S. Department of Commerce. IBM expects HRL to work alongside Anderon to accelerate spin-qubit manufacturing and strengthen future quantum hardware development.
