The Ethereum Foundation has appointed security researcher Pascal Caversaccio, known online as “pcaversaccio” or “pc,” to its board as the organization rebuilds its leadership following months of internal change.

The voluntary, one-year appointment expands the Foundation’s board to four members after the departures of two co-executive directors earlier this year. Caversaccio joins Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, Foundation President Aya Miyaguchi and Swiss counsel Patrick Storchenegger.

The appointment comes at a critical moment for the organization behind the world’s second-largest blockchain. The Foundation has faced questions from parts of the Ethereum community over its priorities, funding decisions and role in guiding the network’s future as competition among blockchain platforms intensifies.

A Security-Focused Board Addition

Caversaccio’s background differs from that of a traditional foundation board member. Rather than coming from corporate leadership or legal circles, he is best known for his work in blockchain security and incident response.

He is a co-founder and lead contributor to SEAL 911, a rapid-response network that helps cryptocurrency projects respond to hacks and security incidents. He has also advised the Ethereum Foundation through its Silviculture Society, a group focused on preserving Ethereum’s core principles, including censorship resistance, open-source development, privacy and security.

Caversaccio has written two widely circulated essays, The Ethereum Cypherpunk Manifesto (2024) and Ethereum Privacy: The Road to Self-Sovereignty (2025), which argue that Ethereum’s long-term direction should remain connected to cypherpunk ideals around privacy, autonomy and decentralized technology.

His appointment gives the board a member with direct experience dealing with some of the ecosystem’s most pressing challenges: software vulnerabilities, protocol security and user protection.

Appointment Follows Major Restructuring

Since the beginning of 2026, the Ethereum Foundation has undergone one of the largest structural changes in its history, following the departures of two executive directors, Tomasz Stańczak and Hsiao-Wei Wang. Over roughly five months, at least eight key contributors have left the organization or moved into different roles.

The restructuring included a staff reduction of about 20% and a new focus around five core research and development areas.

The changes sparked debate among some Ethereum developers and community members, particularly over concerns about the lack of native transaction privacy. Critics warned that without stronger privacy protections, Ethereum could risk becoming a public surveillance infrastructure rather than a tool for user sovereignty.

Caversaccio’s appointment may signal an effort to strengthen security and privacy expertise at the governance level. However, it remains unclear whether his addition will result in meaningful changes to funding priorities, research direction or Ethereum’s broader technology strategy.

A Different Role From Day-to-Day Management

The significance of the appointment also comes from the role of the board itself.

Under Swiss foundation law, board members carry fiduciary responsibilities tied to protecting the organization’s purpose and long-term mission. That authority differs from the responsibilities of operational teams, which execute strategy but do not hold the same governance powers.

The Ethereum Foundation has described its board as a kind of “security council” responsible for protecting the organization’s mission and ensuring it remains aligned with its mandate as a Swiss foundation.

Why This Matters

The appointment gives the Ethereum Foundation a board member with deep security expertise, but whether it represents a broader shift will depend on future decisions over funding, research priorities and the Foundation’s role in Ethereum’s development.
