Glamsterdam will activate on October 6th for the Sepolia testnet, according to Ethereum developers. The upgrade is to undergo yet another round of testing by client teams who will develop software that is compatible. The developers requested that teams release software for Sepolia by September 29th, giving them just seven days for testing.
The warning concerns Ethereum’s implementation of what is known as enshrined proposer-builder separation, or ePBS. EIP-7732 ensures that block construction and validator consensus are separate responsibilities. Under the framework, builders bid on the block proposal while the validator selects the winner of the bid. The winning builder provides the execution payload for the block.
Caution From Developers on Disposable Builders
Ethereum developers have raised concerns over the cheap test ether creating room for exploitation by malicious parties during public testing. This would involve an attack party generating many disposable builder identities and continually submitting bids. The attackers will later withhold execution payloads after having won the auctions.
According to Consensus developer Potuz, the scenario involves up to 1,000 disposable builders. The matter centers on the generation of many identities and the withholding of execution payloads, not theft cases from Ethereum users. There already exist preventive mechanisms to activate when builders do not deliver payloads. However, developers are looking at whether those mechanisms are adequate for handling many disposable builders. The matter is significant since public testnets allow free test assets. Such an environment may lower the cost of conducting certain attacks. This is why developers need Glamsterdam testing to highlight any vulnerabilities before rolling out the upgrade in Ethereum’s mainnet.
Sepolia Tests Come After Controlled Devnet Test
The alert comes after Devnet-11 that successfully conducted the controlled test of Glamsterdam changes. Devnet successfully tested the Gloas transition and increased gas limits from 60 million to 200 million. Nevertheless, developers intentionally concentrated their attention on Devnet-11 on the expected operation path instead of adversarial behavior.
Additional environments will be used for adversarial tests by Ethereum developers. Sepolia utilizes a permissioned validator set managed by clients and testers, whereas Hoodi has an open validator environment. This helps developers explore Glamsterdam under various testing environments. The other features implemented within Glamsterdam include gas repricing and wallet and indexer-related changes. The roadmap for Ethereum plans the mainnet deployment in the fourth quarter of 2026, but no activation date has been announced yet.
