What to know:
- Arkham reports an $85 million Ethereum short near a $1,700 entry.
- The position is down about $9.8 million after ETH’s recovery.
- Ethereum recently traded near $1,900, increasing pressure on the short.
- A reported $2,435 liquidation level remains a key threshold.

Ethereum is facing a derivatives test after Arkham reported that trader pension-usdt.eth is holding an $85 million ETH short opened around $1,700. With ETH near $1,900, the position is under pressure, making the trade an indicator of leverage and short-squeeze risk.
Ethereum Short Position Reaches $85M as ETH Tests $1,900
Arkham reported that pension-usdt.eth opened the short at an average price of about $1,700 and has maintained it for more than two months. The trader is currently down $9.8 million as ETH has climbed almost $200 from the entry. A trade this large can become a source of forced buying if ETH continues higher.
However, an unrealized loss does not mean liquidation is imminent. The trader can maintain it if sufficient collateral remains available. The wallet is therefore a risk indicator, not proof of a squeeze.

Ethereum Gains $200 as $85M Short Remains Under Pressure
Ethereum has recently traded around $1,900, with resistance around that level. Crypto.news reported on August 18 that ETH was trading near $1,905, and technical analysis highlighted $1,900 as an important test.
That price action changes the risk profile of the short. Every move higher increases the unrealized loss, while a reversal could allow the trader to recover part of the position. For ETH traders, the key issue is whether the position can withstand continued upside momentum.
Ethereum ETF Demand Adds Context to the $85M Short Trade
The position comes as institutional access to ETH remains active through U.S. spot ETFs. KuCoin reported that ETH ETFs recorded $49.6 million in net inflows on August 7, showing demand for regulated ETH exposure.
ETF flows do not guarantee higher prices, and they do not explain this trader’s losses. They provide context because bearish leveraged positions compete with channels that can bring capital into ETH. That makes liquidity and positioning important for price moves.
Ethereum Traders Watch the $2,435 Liquidation Level Next
Earlier monitoring data reported by HyperInsight put the position’s liquidation level at about $2,435. If that level remains applicable, ETH would need to rise sharply before forced closure becomes the central risk.
The position is most important as a gauge of leverage rather than a prediction. If ETH continues climbing, liquidation pressure could trigger buying; if ETH falls, the short could become profitable. Investors should watch price, derivatives positioning and ETF flows together rather than treating one wallet as a market signal.
