Ethereum Upgrade Could Let Users Pay Gas Fees Without ETH in 2027

Ethereum users could eventually send stablecoins and other assets without first keeping ETH in their wallets for gas, as developers prepare to include a major account-abstraction proposal in the blockchain’s planned 2027 upgrade.

The proposal, EIP-8141, known as Frame Transactions, has been moved into the planned scope of Ethereum’s Hegotá upgrade after months of development and discussion among core developers. 

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, one of the proposal’s 10 authors, highlighted the progress on Sept. 6, saying that important work on Frames had been happening quietly over the previous few months.

Buterin’s comments come as testing advances for EIP-8141, with Ethrex, a minimalist Ethereum client developed in Rust by Lambda Class, already running a public testnet for several proposals tied to Ethereum’s privacy and account-abstraction roadmap.

Why Ethereum’s EIP-8141 matters for USDC, USDT, and gas fees 

The proposal addresses a common problem for users who hold stablecoins such as USDC or USDT but lack enough ETH to pay network fees. 

Ethereum currently requires transaction fees to be paid in ETH, forcing users to acquire the cryptocurrency before they can move their other assets.

Notably, Frame transactions would separate transaction authorization, fee payment, and execution into different parts of a single transaction. 

This would allow a wallet or application to pay the required ETH fee on a user’s behalf, with the user settling the cost in an ERC-20 token such as a stablecoin.

The change would not make USDC or USDT native gas tokens, as Ethereum would still receive transaction fees in ETH, while another party could handle the payment and receive a different token from the user in return.

The proposal would also allow multiple actions to be combined into a single transaction and designed to succeed or fail together. For example, a token approval and swap could be executed as one operation, with the approval reversed if the swap fails.

EIP-8141 could also give Ethereum accounts greater flexibility over transaction authorization, including programmable approval rules, key rotation, and support for new signature systems without requiring users to move their assets to a new address.

The changes could simplify Ethereum’s user experience while reducing the need for separate relayers and other infrastructure currently used to abstract gas payments.

Ethereum gives Frame Transactions top priority as Hegotá upgrade takes shape

Ethereum’s planned Hegotá upgrade is taking shape around account abstraction, censorship resistance, and longer-term network security, with Frame Transactions emerging as one of its key proposals.

The Ethereum Foundation’s Protocol cluster has given EIP-8141 an S-tier rating, placing it among the proposals considered essential to the fork, as it supports Ethereum’s broader move toward more adaptable account security by allowing transactions to execute multiple actions within a single framework.

The proposal also fits into Ethereum’s longer-term effort to prepare for risk posed by quantum computing

Notably, the Protocol cluster has set a goal of making Ethereum’s execution, consensus, and data layers quantum-resistant by December 2029, amid concerns that sufficiently powerful quantum computers could eventually undermine existing cryptography.

Another S-tier proposal, FOCIL under EIP-7805, is aimed at strengthening censorship resistance by allowing validator committees to require eligible transactions from the public mempool to be included in blocks. 

Developers plan to test FOCIL and Frame Transactions together as part of Hegotá’s engineering work.

Several related proposals, including Keyed Nonces (EIP-8250), Recent Roots (EIP-8272), and FOCIL eligibility rules (EIP-8369), received A-tier ratings.

However, Frame Transactions remain a draft and are not yet available on the Ethereum mainnet. 

Developers are still assessing technical issues, including denial-of-service risks and mempool behavior, while wallet support, client implementations, testnet deployments, and security reviews will be needed before deployment.

Hegotá is expected to follow Glamsterdam, targeted for late 2026, as Ethereum continues to reshape its roadmap around scalability, security, and more flexible account infrastructure.
