FireSat Launches 3 Satellites to Boost Wildfire Detection

Three new FireSat satellites successfully launched on July 7, 2026, from California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base, marking a significant milestone in wildfire detection and prevention technology. The satellites expand the FireSat constellation, a collaborative project between the Earth Fire Alliance (EFA), Muon Space, and Google Research, aimed at providing real-time, high-resolution data to firefighting agencies worldwide.

Backed by $69 million in grants from Google.org, the Bezos Earth Fund, and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the FireSat initiative is designed to detect wildfires as small as 5×5 meters—an unprecedented level of sensitivity. The network leverages Google AI to analyze multispectral infrared data collected by Muon Space’s custom-built sensors, enabling early-stage fire detection and faster response times.

This latest launch transitions FireSat from a demonstration phase to an operational service. The constellation’s first satellite, launched in March 2025 as a prototype, successfully demonstrated the technology by detecting small, low-intensity fires that traditional systems missed. With three additional satellites now in orbit, the network is expected to provide more frequent revisit times and expanded coverage, critical for mitigating wildfire risk in regions like California, Australia, and the Mediterranean.

The FireSat program’s goal is to deploy dozens of satellites by 2030, enabling near-global coverage and real-time data streams. This expansion is particularly vital as climate change exacerbates the frequency and intensity of wildfires. By providing earlier detection and actionable insights, FireSat aims to reduce economic losses, protect ecosystems, and save lives.

“This milestone showcases what’s possible when cutting-edge technology meets collaborative action,” said Christopher Van Arsdale of the Earth Fire Alliance. Google.org has contributed over $15 million to the project to date, underscoring its commitment to applying AI in climate resilience efforts.

As the satellite constellation grows, FireSat is expected to enhance wildfire behavior modeling and predictive analytics. This will not only assist first responders but also aid policymakers in long-term forest management and disaster planning. With full operational capacity targeted by 2030, FireSat is poised to become a cornerstone in global wildfire mitigation strategies.
