Sergey Nazarov is a Russian-American entrepreneur best known as co-founder of Chainlink, the decentralized oracle network that connects smart contracts to real-world data. He was appointed to the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s (CFTC) Innovation Advisory Committee in February 2026.

Who Is Sergey Nazarov?

Sergey Nazarov was born in 1986 in Moscow, in what was then the Soviet Union. His parents, both engineers, emigrated to New York in the early 1990s and introduced him to computers and technology from a young age. He graduated from New York University in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and management.

Nazarov’s early career moved through several roles connected by mentorship and timing. He served as a teaching fellow at NYU’s Stern School of Business from January to May 2010, assisting Professor Lawrence Lenihan, who was also the CEO of the venture capital firm FirstMark Capital, in a technology entrepreneurship course.

That connection led to Nazarov’s own role at FirstMark Capital as an intern-in-residence and later as an associate from April 2009 to November 2010, during which he presented potential investments to the partnership and participated in portfolio company board meetings.

During roughly the same period, from March 2009 to February 2011, he co-founded and ran ExistLocal, a peer-to-peer marketplace for local experiences.

Sergey Nazarov’s Career and Contributions

In 2011, Nazarov founded QED Capital, an early-stage venture fund, serving as General Partner from February 2011 to April 2014. During this period, he also ran a smaller personal venture that rented out GPU hardware to mine Bitcoin on a three-month contract, recouping the rental costs within the first week.

Through QED, he briefly ran CryptaMail, a decentralized email service built on the NXT blockchain, from May to July 2014, before co-founding the Secure Asset Exchange that same month, a platform using smart contracts to help clients share revenue without third-party intermediaries.

In September 2014, Nazarov co-founded SmartContract.com with Steve Ellis, working with Cornell Tech professor Ari Juels to develop a decentralized oracle network that connects smart contracts to external, real-world data.

That work led to the launch of Chainlink in June 2017, accompanied by a whitepaper co-authored by Nazarov, Ellis, and Juels. Nazarov also worked with SWIFT on a pilot project applying smart contracts to automated bond payments.

As CEO of Chainlink Labs, formally established in 2020, Nazarov has overseen the development of Proof of Reserve and the Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP), both of which are now central to how Chainlink verifies data and connects different blockchains.

In 2025, he described a strategic partnership between Chainlink and Japan’s SBI Group, built around CCIP and Proof of Reserve for tokenized assets and regulated stablecoins, as a signal of a shift toward production-level blockchain use in high-value financial transactions.

Nazarov was invited to a White House Crypto Summit in March 2025 and attended the signing ceremony for the GENIUS Act in July 2025. In February 2026, he was named one of 35 members of the CFTC’s Innovation Advisory Committee, advising the commission on how blockchain and artificial intelligence affect derivatives and commodity markets, covering topics including asset tokenization, cryptocurrency derivatives, 24-hour trading, and prediction markets.

He was also named Most Influential by CoinDesk in 2019. His investment activity has included participating in Reputation DAO’s €4.4 million seed round in April 2022 alongside Koji Capital, Framework Ventures, Digital Asset Capital Management, Richard Galvin, and AirTree Ventures.

Sergey Nazarov’s Views and Positions

Nazarov has argued that blockchain technology addresses two structural problems, which are that information asymmetries allow a small group to profit from financial market booms and busts at everyone else’s expense, and the lack of basic financial infrastructure, such as bank accounts and insurance, available to people in emerging markets.

He has described Chainlink’s underlying infrastructure as something he hopes could eventually serve as a public good, comparing its potential significance to that of a postal service or an interstate highway system.

On FTX’s 2022 collapse, Nazarov has argued that the failure reflected a lack of transparency inherited from traditional finance rather than a flaw in blockchain technology itself, saying the technology is “ten times to a hundred times better” than existing financial infrastructure, which he sees as the reason traditional finance is increasingly adopting it.

By February 2026, he said the current market cycle showed improved risk management compared to the FTX era, without a comparable major failure, making the space more attractive to institutional capital.

Nazarov has also made specific predictions about DeFi’s path to mainstream adoption. In November 2025, he estimated DeFi was about 30% of the way toward global mainstream adoption, projecting this could reach 50% with clear US regulatory guidance and 70% once institutions have compliant ways to deploy capital, with full mainstream integration possible by 2030.

He has pointed to tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) as a key driver of that growth, predicting the on-chain RWA segment will eventually exceed the broader crypto market in total value, and has emphasized interoperability tools like the Chainlink Runtime Environment as necessary infrastructure for synchronizing blockchains, off-chain systems, and AI.

Is Sergey Nazarov Satoshi Nakamoto?

Speculation exists that Nazarov could be Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto, citing circumstantial details such as his registration of the smartcontract.com domain shortly before the Bitcoin whitepaper’s release and initials matching those of a Bitcoin address Satoshi once referenced.

A separate claim linking Satoshi’s obscured IP address to Vietnamese hotel reviews posted via a Russian proxy has been disputed, since the underlying methodology could support many different conclusions.

When asked directly in an interview whether he was Satoshi, Nazarov said he did not know who Satoshi was and, if he had to guess, suggested it was probably a group of people, adding that Satoshi’s identity should not matter since Bitcoin functions independently of its creator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Need a refresher? Here are the questions readers most often ask about Sergey Nazarov.

Chainlink is a decentralized oracle network that lets smart contracts securely access real-world data, web APIs, and other off-chain resources. Nazarov co-founded the project with Steve Ellis and Ari Juels, launching it in June 2017, and now serves as CEO of Chainlink Labs, the company formally established in 2020 to build out the protocol.

What is Sergey Nazarov’s role at the CFTC?

In February 2026, Nazarov was named one of 35 members of the CFTC’s Innovation Advisory Committee, which advises the commission on how blockchain and artificial intelligence are affecting derivatives and commodity markets, including topics like asset tokenization, cryptocurrency derivatives, and prediction markets.

What has Sergey Nazarov predicted about DeFi adoption?

What did Sergey Nazarov say about FTX’s collapse?

Nazarov has argued that FTX’s failure reflected a lack of transparency carried over from traditional finance rather than a problem with blockchain technology, and that the current crypto market cycle has shown improved risk management, with no comparable major failure since.

Is Sergey Nazarov Satoshi Nakamoto?

No verified evidence supports this claim. The theory rests on weak circumstantial details, including domain registration timing and an initials match, as well as a disputed IP-tracing claim that outside experts have challenged. When asked directly, Nazarov said he did not know who Satoshi was and guessed it was probably a group of people, which functions as a clear denial rather than confirmation.
