Galaxy Digital has launched a $5 million Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative to strengthen Bitcoin against future quantum computing threats. The program will fund developers building post-quantum cryptographic tools while supporting research, security audits, and industry collaboration before quantum risks become practical.
Galaxy Funds Research to Strengthen Bitcoin Security
Galaxy Digital announced the Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative with up to $5 million in grants for developers creating quantum-resistant security solutions. The company said applications are open immediately for projects advancing Bitcoin’s long-term cryptographic resilience.
The initiative will finance post-quantum signature schemes, wallet migration tools, security audits, and research supporting future Bitcoin network upgrades. Funding will be distributed through milestone-based grants to encourage measurable technical progress and practical implementation.
Galaxy also established a Quantum Advisory Council comprising experts in quantum computing and cryptography. The council will evaluate grant applications while guiding research priorities as quantum technology continues advancing.

According to Galaxy, Bitcoin currently relies on elliptic curve cryptography, which remains secure against existing computers. However, quantum computing could eventually solve mathematical problems that protect Bitcoin wallets much faster than traditional machines.
Galaxy Research head Alex Thorn said the initiative addresses the growing gap between rapid quantum computing advances and slower preparation across Bitcoin’s developer community. The company intends to publish ongoing research for developers, policymakers, and institutional investors throughout the program.
The firm also encouraged universities, technology companies, and financial institutions to contribute funding or technical expertise, supporting broader industry participation in open-source development.
Industry Expands Quantum Readiness Efforts
Galaxy cited research estimating approximately 6.9 million Bitcoin could become vulnerable if sufficiently powerful quantum computers break existing cryptographic protections. Based on current market values, those holdings represent roughly $461 billion in potential exposure.
Although experts generally agree such machines remain years away, developers argue preparations should begin well before the technology becomes commercially capable. Bitcoin’s decentralized governance means major cryptographic upgrades could require years of coordination across developers, wallet providers, exchanges, and users.
The initiative follows similar efforts across the cryptocurrency industry. Coinbase previously formed a quantum advisory council and released research encouraging early migration planning.
Strategy also announced a Bitcoin Security Program earlier this year, reflecting increasing attention toward post-quantum security.
Meanwhile, Bitcoin improvement proposals, including BIP-360 and BIP-361, continue exploring future quantum-resistant cryptographic upgrades. Ethereum and the XRP Ledger are also researching similar protections as governments increase investments in quantum computing and defensive cybersecurity technologies worldwide.
