While many shows are desperately trying to shrink the gaps between seasons in order to retain viewers, Apple TV is split down the middle. On one hand, you have Slow Horses, which has sometimes gotten new seasons out in less than a year. On the other, you have sprawling sci-fi series like Severance or Pluribus that are pushing 2.5-3 years.
Well, there’s at least one point of good news about the Pluribus season 2 release date now: Writing has finally finished for the new season, meaning production can begin. The writing start/end process has been more complicated than most shows, given that Vince Gilligan does not have grand arcs mapped out and has said he sometimes writes himself into corners. So figuring out what’s going to happen next can be tricky. Last month he said they were finally able to “break” season 2.
When is the Pluribus season 2 release date?
As for the Pluribus season 2 release date, which is no doubt still far away, we can track what happened with season 1:
Writing finished for season 1 finished roughly in January 2024, and the show was released on November 7, 2025. That’s a gap of 22 months, just under two years.
If writing for season 2 just finished in September 2026, 22 months from now would be a July 2028 premiere date. And that date would be 2 years and 8 months after season 1 of Pluribus aired. Woof.
That mirrors what happened with Severance, where there was a 2-year and 9-month gap between seasons, something those making the series have said they’re trying to slim down for season 3. Pluribus’ Vince Gilligan, meanwhile, has been open about how this is going to take a long, long time and he wasn’t going to pretend like it wouldn’t. This confuses many fans who remember that not all that long ago, Gilligan got out 62 episodes of Breaking Bad in 5.5 years. But that was over a decade ago, and those days are long gone.
The good news? There is a near-universal trend in streaming: viewership often drops significantly between seasons when there is an especially long gap. But if we are using Severance as a direct parallel for Pluribus, Severance season 2 actually gained viewers when season 2 returned, due to the fact that it became such a sensation. Will Pluribus, now nominated for a bunch of Emmys, be able to do the same? We will find out in, well, 22 months, it seems. Hopefully that can be sped up a bit, but in the best case we’re probably looking at 2.5 years between seasons. That’s just where we are these days.
