IonQ (IONQ) stock rose 1% to $41.83 in after-hours trading on Wednesday. The gain came after a fresh update on the company’s work with the U.S. Department of Defense.
The quantum computing company advanced to Stage C of DARPA’s Quantum Benchmarking Initiative. This is the final stage of the program.

DARPA’s Quantum Benchmarking Initiative checks whether quantum computers can reach useful scale. The agency defines that as a system whose value is worth more than its cost to build and run.
IonQ reached this point after finishing the first two stages of the program. Stage A covered the technical plan, and Stage B covered the research roadmap.
What Happens in Stage C?
Stage C will run through 2029. DARPA will independently test multiple generations of IonQ’s Superion quantum systems.
The agency will check the hardware and software against IonQ’s own technical roadmap. The goal is to confirm the systems work the way the company says they do.
The $300 million figure is a potential value, not a guaranteed payout. Future funding depends on new DARPA appropriations and separate funding decisions.
IonQ has not said how large the initial payment is. More money would only come as the company hits certain milestones.
IonQ joins a short list of companies at this stage. Atom Computing, Diraq, and IBM also made Stage C recently.
Microsoft and PsiQuantum had already reached the final phase through an earlier DARPA program. That puts IonQ among a small group of firms trusted with this level of testing.
What Analysts Think of IonQ Stock
Wall Street currently rates IonQ a Strong Buy. The rating is based on 11 Buy calls and one Hold.
The average price target sits at $71. That number points to upside of about 72% from current levels.
IonQ’s quantum computing services have been live on major cloud platforms since 2021. The company runs operations across North America, Latin America, EMEA, and APAC.
IonQ Chairman and CEO Niccolo de Masi called the Stage C advance a vote of confidence in the company’s roadmap. He said the firm plans to keep scaling manufacturing and deployment of its Superion systems.
The company says it will keep taking on customers in commercial, scientific, and security fields. For now, the DARPA testing work is the main focus through 2029.
