Alphabet reports earnings after the close on Wednesday, and the numbers will tell investors whether the company can keep outrunning its own AI spending.

In Q1 2026, Alphabet posted revenue growth of 22% and operating income growth of 30%. The operating margin came in at 36.1% — the highest in five years.

That’s a strong base to work from. But the costs are getting bigger.

Wall Street expects quarterly capital expenditure to come in around $44 billion in Wednesday’s report. Alphabet has already said it plans to spend up to $190 billion for the full year.

For context, the company spent $35.7 billion last quarter on servers, data centers, and infrastructure. Alphabet has already warned that 2027 spending will be even higher.

Can Margins Hold Up?

The key number to watch is the operating margin. Analysts expect it to dip to around 34.7% this quarter as capex climbs.

Alphabet spreads the cost of servers and network equipment over six years. That means today’s spending hits profits gradually — but that bill is now starting to land.

Alphabet confirmed depreciation will accelerate this year as earlier investments enter service. Energy costs and other data center expenses are adding to the pressure.

Holding margins near 35% while growing revenue at roughly 20% would signal Alphabet is still managing the balance. A steeper margin drop would suggest costs are catching up.

Google Cloud Is Carrying Weight

Google Cloud continues to be a bright spot. Revenue jumped 63% last quarter to more than $20 billion. Cloud operating income tripled.

Search revenue rose 19%, keeping the advertising engine running alongside the growing cloud business.

That dual-engine setup is helping Alphabet absorb AI costs better than many expected.

Beyond Alphabet itself, Wednesday’s results carry weight for the broader tech market. Evercore ISI strategist Julian Emanuel noted that Alphabet’s report is a “moment of truth” for investors deciding whether to hold Mag 7 names or rotate into beaten-down semiconductor stocks.

Semiconductor stocks have underperformed the Magnificent Seven over the past month. Investors are watching for whether a strong Alphabet print — especially on capex guidance — could lift both groups.

There’s also a new overhang on the sector. China’s Moonshot AI recently released the low-cost Kimi K3 model, which some analysts are comparing to the DeepSeek release in early 2025. That’s adding fresh questions about whether US tech companies are spending too much on AI.

Alphabet’s capex guidance and margin performance on Wednesday will go a long way toward answering that.
