TLDR:
- Kalshi generated over $148B in 2026, equal to about 85.5% of its more than $173B lifetime trading volume.
- 2026 volume is already 6.2 times Kalshi’s full 2025 total of $23.8B, with nearly five months still remaining.
- World Cup markets produced about $27B in volume, while July trading reached roughly $37.7B to $41.05B.
- Kalshi’s 15-minute crypto volume jumped from $53.8M in January to about $4.8B during July 2026 alone.
Kalshi has generated more than $148 billion in trading volume during 2026, marking the strongest expansion period in the prediction market platform’s history. That figure represents roughly 85.5% of its more than $173 billion in cumulative event-contract trading volume.
Data compiled by KalshiData with Artemis through August 8 shows how heavily the platform’s lifetime activity is concentrated in 2026. The dataset measures event-contract notional at $1 face value and excludes perpetual contracts, deposits, customer balances, and company revenue.
2026 Trading Volume Dwarfs Kalshi’s Previous Annual Records
The scale of this year’s growth becomes clearer when compared with previous annual totals. According to an official X post, Kalshi processed approximately $23.8 billion in notional trading volume throughout 2025. That represented a 1,108% increase from the previous year.
However, 2026 activity has already surpassed last year’s total by more than 6.2 times, even with nearly five months remaining in the calendar year. As a result, most of the platform’s recorded trading history has accumulated within just over seven months.
Only about $25 billion of Kalshi’s roughly $173 billion cumulative event-contract volume was generated before 2026. By comparison, this year’s $148 billion total is almost six times its entire pre-2026 historical volume, underscoring the scale of the recent expansion.

Sports contracts have been one of the main drivers of that growth. During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the platform recorded approximately $27 billion in trading volume and attracted around 3 million users.
Consequently, the tournament alone accounted for a significant portion of the company’s year-to-date activity. That momentum continued into July, when datasets placed monthly trading volume between approximately $37.7 billion and $41.05 billion.
The variation between those estimates reflects differences in measurement methodologies. Nevertheless, both figures show that trading activity remained elevated after the World Cup period.
At the same time, short-duration cryptocurrency contracts expanded sharply. Fifteen-minute cryptocurrency markets increased from $53.8 million in January to approximately $4.8 billion in July.
Meanwhile, sports and combination contracts generated about $32 billion in July activity. Building on that demand, Kalshi later expanded its short-duration market format into gold and silver contracts.
Institutional participation also increased alongside retail trading activity. The company reported that institutional trading volume rose 800% during the six months preceding its May financing round. That funding round raised $1 billion and valued the company at $22 billion.
Sports Boom Accelerates Growth Amid Regulatory Disputes
However, the rapid expansion in trading volume has unfolded alongside growing disagreements over how certain event contracts should be regulated in the United States. KalshiEX operates as a CFTC-designated contract market, placing qualifying contracts within the federal derivatives regulatory framework.
The CFTC considers eligible event contracts traded on designated venues to fall under its oversight. However, several states have challenged that interpretation, arguing that sports-related event contracts amount to gambling and should therefore remain subject to state gambling laws.
As a result, the dispute has created a fragmented regulatory environment across the country. Most recently, a federal judge allowed Utah to enforce its anti-gambling laws against the platform, adding another layer of uncertainty to the broader legal debate.
