What to know:

  • KSNET partners with Solana Foundation to expand blockchain payments across South Korea’s merchant network.
  • Solana Pay integration targets 330,000 merchants with secure, compliant cryptocurrency payment infrastructure nationwide.
  • KSNET explores the x402 protocol to enable AI-powered microtransactions using Solana blockchain technology efficiently.

South Korean payment processor KSNET has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Solana Foundation to develop a next-generation digital asset payment infrastructure, marking another step in Solana’s expansion into real-world payments.

The partnership will integrate Solana Pay into KSNET’s merchant network while exploring AI-powered payment models using the emerging x402 protocol.

The initiative could become one of South Korea’s largest blockchain payment projects. KSNET serves more than 330,000 merchants, processes around 130 million transactions each month, and handles nearly $4 billion in monthly payment volume.

If commercialized, the integration would significantly expand Solana’s presence in one of Asia’s most advanced digital payment markets.

KSNET Brings Solana Pay to 330,000 Korean Merchants

The first stage of this collaboration will show the integration of Solana Pay within the payment infrastructure built by KSNET over 26 years. The objective is not to replace the existing payment rails, but rather to incorporate blockchain payments within the existing network of merchants at KSNET.

Compliance is a key component of the project. KSNET revealed that the proof-of-concept would have robust anti-money laundering (AML) measures while adhering to South Korea’s financial regulations.

The firms also intend to integrate digital asset settlements in the current Korean Won settlement network to address the issues of exchange rate volatility and liquidity. CEO Park Hankook of KSNET noted that the firm would leverage its experience in payments to provide a trustworthy digital asset payment system.

AI Payments Could Unlock New Blockchain Use Cases

This collaboration also entails the testing of x402, a new internet-specific payment protocol that allows AI agents to autonomously conduct micropayments for API-based services without depending on credit cards or any form of human verification.

With the continued rise of AI-driven technologies, M2M payments are becoming one of the promising applications for blockchain technology.

The ability of Solana to settle transactions quickly and efficiently will make it an excellent tool for managing such micro-payments, making it an attractive blockchain application for the future.

Partnership Builds on KSNET’s Crypto Expansion

The Solana deal is preceded by the deal between KSNET and Crypto.com in May 2025, where Crypto.com would facilitate cryptocurrency transactions from foreign tourists at leading retail outlets in South Korea and accept the Crypto.com Visa Card on Jeju’s transport network.

For Solana, such cooperation confirms its decision to transition from decentralized finance to more conventional payment infrastructure.

Although the MOU is related to the testing of the proof-of-concept model and not to the actual application of the technology in practice, a positive outcome may open up new possibilities for Solana’s expansion. The cooperation is also indicative of the increasing trust institutions have in blockchain-based payments systems.

What Happens Next?

Solana Pay and x402 will start proof-of-concept tests with the help of KSNET and the Solana Foundation. In case these tests succeed, the partners will then deploy the blockchain payments in a phased manner, according to the needs of the South Korean financial market environment.
