TL;DR

  • Pilot focus: Mastercard and Borderless.xyz are testing Crypto Credential to improve trust and compliance in cross-border stablecoin payments by using shared assurance signals.
  • Network testing: Infinia, Walapay, and Koywe will evaluate how the framework performs across Borderless.xyz’s global stablecoin network under a single-audit compliance model.
  • Broader expansion: The pilot follows Mastercard’s $1.8 billion BVNK acquisition and its rollout of regulated stablecoin settlement support.

Mastercard and Borderless.xyz are launching a new pilot designed to strengthen trust in cross-border stablecoin payments by applying shared identity checks through the Crypto Credential framework. The initiative focuses on how standardized assurance signals can help participants streamline approval, compliance, and risk processes across digital asset transactions.

Pilot Targets Friction in Cross-Border Stablecoin Payments

The companies said the pilot will evaluate how Crypto Credential performs across Borderless.xyz’s global stablecoin orchestration network. The framework uses common standards and assurance signals to bring greater certainty to blockchain interactions, and the pilot will explore new governance signals that could reduce friction in cross-border flows.

Kevin Lehtiniitty, CEO and co-founder of Borderless, said compliance remains one of the biggest pain points in stablecoin payments. He noted that correspondent banking solved this decades ago by allowing originating compliance to be trusted downstream. He added that Mastercard is applying that model to digital asset payments. Crypto Credential will act as a governance and verification layer, though Mastercard will not process or settle funds during the pilot.

Borderless.xyz connects wallet infrastructure with more than 15 licensed stablecoin providers across more than 100 countries. According to the announcement, Infinia, Walapay, and Koywe have joined the pilot and will be among the first operators to test Crypto Credential within a single-audit compliance model at network scale.

Raj Dhamodharan, executive vice president for Blockchain and Digital Assets at Mastercard, said the relationship with Borderless.xyz began through Start Path and has grown as the digital asset ecosystem matured. He said the pilot represents the next step in exploring how Crypto Credential can support trusted interactions across a growing network of participants.

Part of Mastercard’s Broader Stablecoin Expansion

The pilot follows Mastercard’s acquisition of BVNK in a $1.8 billion deal and builds on its June rollout of regulated stablecoin settlement support for assets including USDC, PYUSD, USDG, USDP, RLUSD and SoFiUSD. It also aligns with the company’s Crypto Partner Program, launched in March to develop enterprise use cases such as remittances, settlement and payouts.
