Shares have gained more than 260% this year. Investors now face competing signals: strong demand for artificial intelligence memory chips and uncertainty over how long current pricing can last.

Analysts Build Their Case Around Earnings

D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria raised his Micron target from $2,100 to $3,000 on October 7. He maintained a Buy rating, citing tight memory supply and continuing demand from AI companies.

Separately, World Trade Securities chief executive Nicholas Mugalli projected $3,000 within two years. His forecast assumes fiscal 2028 earnings of $200 per share and a valuation of 15 times earnings. Recent Micron analyst coverage also documented higher targets.

Micron says over 75% of its 2027 output is committed. Its 26 strategic agreements cover more than 35% of estimated revenue through 2030. Many contracts include negotiated price floors and ceilings.

Why Micron Stock Has Struggled to Break Higher

Despite those commitments, Micron stock has traded mainly between $1,000 and $1,100 since mid-September. Concerns about AI spending and the risk of weaker memory prices have weighed on semiconductor shares.

The weakness has extended beyond Micron. Samsung’s record profit report failed to prevent a decline in its shares on October 8, even as strong memory demand lifted earnings.

Industry capacity could also increase in 2028 as manufacturers expand production. Greater supply would test whether today’s high prices can persist and whether analysts’ earnings forecasts remain achievable.

December Buybacks Become the Next Focus

On October 8, Micron’s board increased its share repurchase authorization to $35.16 billion. Under its CHIPS Act funding agreements, expanded purchases may begin December 9, subject to financial and other conditions.

UBS analyst Timothy Arcuri expects buybacks to support the shares. He sees purchases potentially starting near $20 billion per quarter. Friday’s rebound in technology futures followed a selloff tied partly to questions about OpenAI revenue.

Buybacks could reduce outstanding shares and raise earnings per share, but they remain discretionary. Micron has not committed to spending the full authorization, and share purchases would not ensure a move above $1,100.
