The dividend increase adds 7 cents per share over the previous quarter. At current prices, that puts the yield at 0.78%.

The 8% bump is a touch below the roughly 10% average increase Microsoft has delivered over the past five years. But it stays in line with the company’s track record of growing its dividend steadily alongside earnings.

The move comes as Microsoft is spending heavily on artificial intelligence infrastructure. Capital expenditures hit $41 billion in the fiscal fourth quarter alone and $145 billion across the full fiscal year.

Wall Street is expecting that spending to keep climbing into fiscal 2027. That kind of outlay puts pressure on management to show it can still return cash to investors at the same time.

Balancing AI Investment With Investor Returns

Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Wood addressed that tension directly in a research note. “We think management views dividends as a permanent commitment, leaving room for continued share repurchases while balancing elevated AI infrastructure investments,” he wrote.

That framing matters. Microsoft has poured money into Azure and its AI assistant tool, Copilot. Those bets have driven up costs, and investors are watching closely to see whether returns can keep pace.

The dividend hike suggests management wants to signal that shareholder returns are not being pushed aside in favor of AI buildout.
