NEAR Protocol is expanding its ecosystem across payments and artificial intelligence as Oracle and SVRN develop a proof of concept for stablecoin payments on Oracle Simphony, a point-of-sale system that processes more than 6.3 billion transactions annually.

The system settles payments on NEAR and is designed for checkout times of under three seconds. The development also connects with NEAR’s growing AI strategy, with NEAR AI Cloud recently becoming a provider on OpenRouter and making its models available through the platform.

What Happened With NEAR Protocol?

Oracle and SVRN have created a proof of concept that incorporates stablecoin payments into the Oracle Simphony point-of-sale system developed by Oracle. As per NEAR Protocol, the system processes more than 6.3 billion transactions a year.

The proof of concept uses NEAR for settlement and aims to complete checkout in less than three seconds. The settled funds can then be used in treasury operations, loyalty programs, and supplier payments.

There are several factors that contributed to the decision by Oracle of choosing NEAR. These include fast processing, lower fees per transaction, and capability to settle on various chains via NEAR Intents. Oracle uses delegated authorization, which enables one account to operate on behalf of another.

Delegated authorization and cross-chain settlement may be used not only for payments but also for other applications that involve executing transactions on behalf of a user, using an AI agent, and within certain permissions.

How Does NEAR AI Fit Into the Expansion?

Development in payment systems for NEAR is happening along with the expansion of the AI capabilities of NEAR. NEAR AI Cloud announced that it has now become a provider of OpenRouter. This collaboration enables the availability of NEAR AI’s GLM 5.3 Flash Model that has a 1 million-token context window using the provider slug ‘near-ai.’

This allows developers to access NEAR AI infrastructure via another channel through an existing model routing system. The collaboration further connects the blockchain capabilities of NEAR with its AI strategy.

While both developments aim at various areas in the ecosystem, there is one similarity between them in that they both deal with providing access to infrastructure to perform tasks, process information, and move value.

What Does the Development Mean for NEAR?

In terms of practical applications for the Oracle proof-of-concept, it provides an enterprise-oriented use case for NEAR, based on settlement of stablecoins, while the integration with OpenRouter expands the coverage of NEAR AI’s cloud network.

For the blockchain industry as a whole, the merger is interesting since artificial intelligence applications need not only the access to the models but also other capabilities like identity, permissions, payments, and interoperability across networks.

The emphasis that NEAR puts on delegated authorization and cross-chain settlement can be seen as fulfilling some of those requirements through transactions. On the other hand, NEAR AI Cloud offers infrastructure for accessing AI models.

None of the two announcements can be seen as evidence of large-scale adoption. However, taken together, they prove that NEAR is going for applications for both blockchain-based payments and AI infrastructure.

What Happens Next?

The following phase in the Oracle and SVRN proof of concept will be if the payment solution goes from testing to implementation. If this occurs, we can get a better idea of how well the NEAR settlement technology functions in the real world of payments.

In terms of the AI, the availability of the NEAR AI Cloud via OpenRouter is another way to access NEAR’s models and technology. Further integrations may lead to more applications being developed on top of NEAR’s AI stack.

Therefore, in the case of NEAR Protocol, the critical developments to monitor include adoption of the payment system, more integrations of NEAR Intents and delegation of authority, and the deployment of NEAR AI infrastructure.

Currently, NEAR Protocol is developing in two linked spaces: payments via blockchain and AI infrastructure. While the Oracle and SVRN proof of concept highlights the potential use of NEAR for stablecoin settlement, the integration of NEAR AI Cloud with OpenRouter increases the availability of AI services. The importance of these developments in the long term will depend on the actual adoption of such integrations.
