TLDRs;

  • Oklo stock fell nearly 16% in a week as investors shifted attention to upcoming reactor startup milestones.
  • Despite the selloff, the company maintains over $2.5 billion in cash and marketable securities.
  • Markets are closely watching regulatory approvals needed before Groves can achieve initial criticality.
  • Investors appear more concerned about execution timelines than liquidity as nuclear sector volatility increases.

Oklo (NYSE: OKLO) shares came under significant pressure last week as investors turned their attention away from the company’s strong cash position and toward a crucial regulatory and operational milestone expected this month. The advanced nuclear technology company ended Friday at $41.11, marking a weekly decline of nearly 16%, as markets reassessed execution risks tied to the startup timeline of its Groves reactor project.

The sharp retreat made Oklo one of the weakest performers among publicly traded nuclear-energy companies during the period. While the broader nuclear sector also experienced losses, Oklo’s decline exceeded those of several industry peers, highlighting growing investor sensitivity to project timelines and regulatory progress.

Investors Prioritize Execution

Recent trading activity suggests that investors are increasingly focused on whether Oklo can successfully move its Groves facility through the final stages required before startup.

The company has been working toward achieving initial criticality at the Groves facility, a key technical milestone in reactor development. While the project is not designed as a commercial power-producing reactor, reaching criticality would represent an important demonstration of Oklo’s engineering capabilities and ability to navigate complex regulatory processes.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Energy completed its review of the facility’s final safety analysis, clearing an important hurdle. However, several steps remain before the reactor can begin operations, including readiness assessments, fuel loading procedures, and final startup authorization.

These pending approvals have become the primary focus for investors looking for evidence that the company can meet its development schedule.

Strong Balance Sheet Remains

Despite the stock’s recent weakness, Oklo’s financial position remains one of its strongest assets. As of March 31, the company reported approximately $2.54 billion in cash and marketable securities. During the first quarter, operating cash usage totaled roughly $17.9 million, while capital expenditures reached about $32.8 million.

The figures suggest that liquidity is not currently a pressing concern for the company. In fact, Oklo’s available resources provide substantial flexibility as it continues funding reactor development, regulatory work, and future growth initiatives.

Much of the capital was raised through equity issuance. During the quarter, Oklo sold more than 12 million shares, generating over $1.18 billion in proceeds. The company later established an additional $1 billion at-the-market offering program, creating another avenue for raising capital if needed.

While this strengthens financial flexibility, investors remain aware that future share sales could dilute existing shareholders.

Nuclear Sector Faces Pressure

NuScale Power also posted a double-digit weekly loss, while a major nuclear-focused exchange-traded fund recorded a smaller decline. However, some established nuclear operators proved more resilient, underscoring the distinction investors are making between companies generating revenue today and firms still advancing developmental projects.

The divergence reflects a growing emphasis on project execution. Companies that rely on future milestones often experience sharper share-price reactions when investors perceive uncertainty surrounding schedules or regulatory approvals.

At the same time, broader market sentiment offered little support. Major U.S. equity indexes moved lower during the week, contributing to risk-off behavior across growth-oriented sectors.
