Optimism targets Korea’s RWA boom – Can KB Securities drive OP adoption?

KB Securities, part of Korea’s largest bank, has taken its first public step in tokenizing its business through migrating some of its traditional Korean financial products onto the Optimism [OP] Mainnet.

By doing so, they will be pairing their extensive institutional distribution channel with Securitize’s tokenization platform, as well as Optimism’s settlement layer.

It starts with a tokenized money market fund and a fund tied to a KB Asset Management strategy. This allows Korean institutions to obtain on-chain versions of their existing investments.

This lets KB Securities test demand before expanding to more asset classes. If successful, this model may also extend to stocks, ADRs, corporate debt securities, and Korean government-issued debt securities, once regulatory frameworks develop.

Ultimately, Korea’s participation could broaden institutional tokenization beyond U.S. dollar-denominated assets.

Optimism gains institutional traction

The partnership gives Optimism an opportunity to move from just being a Layer 1 (L1) blockchain infrastructure into Korea’s institutional securities pipeline.

Meanwhile, OP Mainnet can process settlements with low cost, approximately two-second block times. Moreover, it is compatible with the Ethereum [ETH] protocol. This allows Securitize to be responsible for the tokenization and management of these new digital asset offerings.

This approach enables KB Securities to launch new product offerings that can be settled via an existing transaction rail.

The initial step will include a proposed issuance by a money market fund. The larger potential of this project will depend on if the regulatory agencies in South Korea allow securitizations. This could involve using similar rails to issue bonds and equities.

Notably, Securitize currently manages over $5 billion worth of tokenized assets, which provides a strong base for Optimism to expand upon.

KB Securities’ success could create a repeatable institutional use case for Optimism throughout Asia rather than another single-use tokenization project.

Tokenization faces its adoption test

Institutional adoption will determine whether KB Securities’ tokenized funds create lasting activity on OP Mainnet. Currently, RWA Assets Under Management (AUM) sits near $39 million, with Securitize holding about $26 million.

However, secondary transfers remain limited, often reaching only hundreds of dollars across recent 30-day periods. Therefore, this implies that almost all the current volume is being generated by primary allocation rather than active trading.

Securitize’s wider platform shows stronger demand, with monthly transfers reaching hundreds of millions of dollars, but those flows remain concentrated elsewhere.

Therefore, the key test will be whether KB Securities can attract repeat business from its customers. Repeat purchasing behavior and increased volume of trades occurring regularly among current holders.

In turn, this would demonstrate sustained interest and demand for the products being offered.
