Polish authorities arrested Polish Olympic Committee President Radosław Piesiewicz on Thursday over alleged bribes tied to Zondacrypto sponsorship deals. Prosecutors suspect Piesiewicz accepted improper benefits from the crypto platform in exchange for Olympic partnership arrangements. The arrest intensifies a months-long investigation that has already triggered calls from sports federations for his resignation.
Authorities opened the investigation in April as concerns grew over Zondacrypto’s business activities and political connections. Additionally, investigators are examining Piesiewicz’s role in arranging a sponsorship agreement with the cryptocurrency company.
The deal promised cryptocurrency rewards to Polish medalists at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina. However, reports indicate that athletes did not receive the promised bonuses consistently.
Media reports also linked Piesiewicz to an expensive watch allegedly provided by Zondacrypto executive Przemyslaw Kral. Piesiewicz denied wrongdoing and maintained that he purchased the watch himself.
Wider Zondacrypto Fallout
Meanwhile, authorities estimate Zondacrypto’s collapse caused losses of about 350 million zlotys or roughly $86 million, affecting roughly 30,000 people. The investigation also examines possible connections between the company, nationalist political circles, and Russian intelligence.
Furthermore, the case of the disappearance of the founder, Sylwester Suszek, from 2022, is still being investigated by prosecutors. As a result, the case has grown to include charges of not only bribery but also allegations of broader political corruption and financial control.
