The Boston Red Sox entered this month trying to stabilize a roster that has been hit by injuries and inconsistent pitching. While the return of one of their most important young players has provided reason for some optimism, Boston has also continued reshaping its depth in the final weeks before the playoffs begin.
“The Red Sox have lost three of their last four games with their pitching staff struggling in a way it hasn’t all season,” MassLive’s Chris Cotillo reported on Thursday. “Still, the return of a healthy — and productive — Roman Anthony has been a major bright spot.”
With Anthony back in the fold, Ceddanne Rafaela listed as day to day, and several other key players looking to return before the end of the regular season, the Red Sox have been reshaping the edges of the roster. And those changes have now cost one very recent addition his spot in the organization.
Boston Red Sox Castoff Quickly Finds New Opportunity In National League
After spending just one game with the Red Sox, infielder Brett Harris has been cast off and is now headed to a National League West division club.
“Giants claimed INF Brett Harris off waivers from the Red Sox (and) optioned him to Triple-A Sacramento,” NBC Sports’ David Shovein reported. “The 28-year-old infielder had been designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Tuesday as they faced a 40-man roster crunch.”
Harris’ Boston tenure was about as brief as possible, though he had evidently shown enough this season in the Athletic’s minor league system to intrigue the Giants to pick him up once he became available.
“The Red Sox acquired Harris in a minor trade with the A’s in July,” Charlie Wright noted for MLB Trade Rumors. “He’d recently been DFAed by the Athletics. Harris appeared in just one game with Boston shortly after the trade. He started at first base and went 0-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch.”
The move to San Francisco gives Harris another chance to establish himself in an organization dealing with significant infield uncertainty.

Harris has spent most of the 2026 season in the minor leagues and has produced considerably better results there than in the majors. Between the Athletics and Red Sox organizations, he posted a 119 wRC+ across 71 minor league games, demonstrating why clubs have continued to view him as useful organizational depth.
The Giants’ interest in Harris appears to center largely on his ability to move around the infield. During his major league career, he has appeared at first base, second base and third base, while also seeing time at shortstop in the minors.
That versatility could be particularly valuable for San Francisco, which has dealt with injuries and absences involving several established infielders. Harris’ major league track record remains limited, however, with a career .593 OPS across 74 games.
