The Boston Red Sox knew exactly what they were getting when they traded for Willson Contreras: an accomplished slugger whose fiery personality has occasionally spilled over into controversy on the field.
That history of offensive production and on-field altercations continued into 2026.
Boston acquired Contreras from the St. Louis Cardinals before the season, with the veteran first baseman quickly becoming one of the team’s most important offensive pieces. But his season has also included several ejections, creating a complicated relationship between his competitive personality and the expectations that come with playing in Boston.
In July, the slugger incited a benches-clearing brawl after he was hit by Washington Nationals pitcher Cade Cavalli, shortly after he was ejected from a game for another incident.
“MLB suspended Contreras and Cavalli for seven games each. Both appealed and are awaiting the league’s response. The day before, Contreras was ejected by first base umpire Nic Lentz for tapping his helmet, pretending to challenge Lentz calling him out on a check swing,” Kaley Brown reported at the time for Boston.com. “Before both instances, on June 26, Contreras was at the center of a separate benches-clearing moment against the New York Yankees.”
Now, Contreras’ latest on-field controversy has drawn some stark criticism from fans on social media.

Contreras began a rehab assignment after Boston placed him on the injured list at the end of August with a left hamstring strain. The 34-year-old had been one of the Red Sox’s most productive hitters before the injury, entering his absence with 26 home runs, 79 RBI and a .900 OPS.
His return to game action with the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs on Saturday, however, produced an unusual moment.
“After a pitch went well wide of the plate, Contreras stepped out of the box and attempted to put more pine tar on his bat,” Joseph Zucker noted for Bleacher Report. “The home plate umpire wasn’t having it, and the four-time All-Star seemed to initiate his own form of protest. Contreras didn’t take the bat off his shoulder and struck out looking. He went 0-for-3 in Portland’s 1-0 win.”
The video of Contreras’ at-bat protest quickly drew attention online, with many fans taking issue with the slugger’s decision to entirely give up an at-bat by watching strikes blow past him.
“I would get rid of him because he is a problem,” wrote one fan in response to a video of the protest posted on X, formerly Twitter.
“Imagine him in a real job,” wrote another. “He has no appreciation for fans that went to Portland tonight just to see him.”

The reactions add another notable chapter to a season in which Contreras has simultaneously established himself as a major offensive force and repeatedly found himself at the center of controversy.
Boston ultimately needs the production more than it needs the drama as it looks to hang onto a Wild Card playoff spot.
Contreras’ rehab assignment is designed to get him ready for a return when the hamstring is healthy. But after another polarizing moment, he has reminded Red Sox fans that his intensity can be as noticeable as his bat.
