TLDR

  • Rocket Lab shares rose about 4% Tuesday after Bloomberg reported NASA is nearing a bulk purchase of rocket launches for its moon base program.
  • NASA could order four or five rocket types at once, assigning each to a commercial lunar lander.
  • The news comes as SpaceX plans to stop taking new dedicated Falcon 9 bookings after 2028, opening the door for alternatives like Rocket Lab’s Neutron.
  • RKLB stock is up 14% over the past month, beating the Aerospace-Defense industry’s 5% decline.
  • Q2 2026 revenue jumped 62% year over year to $234.1 million, with Space Systems revenue up 94%.

Rocket Lab stock climbed Tuesday, trading up around 4% near $75.70. The move came after Bloomberg reported NASA is preparing a bulk purchase of rocket launches for its $30 billion moon base push.

NASA’s moon base program manager, Carlos García-Galán, told Bloomberg the agency will “probably announce the first set of these bulk buys” soon. The plan could see four or five rocket types ordered in one batch.

Each rocket would then get paired with a commercial lunar lander. NASA says any leftover capacity could go to other government agencies.

The timing lines up with World Space Week, which started October 4 across 100 countries. This year’s theme is “Rocket Revolution,” and organizers point to falling launch costs as a driver of new space activity.

A Falcon 9 Shortage Is Opening Doors

There’s a bigger story playing out behind the NASA news. SpaceX has started turning away satellite operators who want dedicated Falcon 9 launches after 2028.

That’s created a gap for newer rockets to fill. Rocket Lab’s Neutron is one of several candidates lining up, alongside Relativity Space’s Terran R, Firefly Aerospace’s Eclipse and Stoke Space’s Nova.

None of these rockets have proven they can fly at high volume yet. Building up launch cadence takes years, so it’s not guaranteed any of them will be flying often by 2029.

Rocket Lab’s business isn’t just about Neutron, though. The company builds the Electron rocket, Photon satellite platforms, and runs full missions for government and commercial customers.

The Numbers Behind the Rally

Tuesday’s pop adds to a solid run for RKLB. The stock is up 13.6% over the past month, while the Zacks Aerospace-Defense Equipment industry has dropped 5% in the same stretch.

Peers haven’t fared as well. Curtiss-Wright fell 4.6% and TransDigm dropped 6% over the same period.

Rocket Lab’s growth is coming largely from its Space Systems segment. The company makes solar cells, composite structures, star trackers, batteries and other spacecraft components.

In Q2 2026, total revenue rose 62% year over year to $234.1 million. Space Systems revenue alone jumped 94% to $189.5 million, helped by acquisitions and manufacturing growth.

Segment gross profit more than doubled to $65.5 million. The company closed the quarter with a $2.36 billion backlog.

In September, Rocket Lab rolled out IMM Apex, a next-generation solar cell. It claims 31.5% efficiency at beginning of life with 40% less mass than older germanium-based cells, and it’s built to swap directly into existing spacecraft designs.

Rocket Lab says more than 1,100 satellites already run on its solar products. That track record is part of the pitch for IMM Apex.

On the balance sheet, Rocket Lab’s debt-to-capital ratio sits at 0.83%, far below the industry average of 61.13%. Its current ratio is 5.48, also well above the industry’s 2.06.

The stock isn’t cheap by traditional measures. RKLB trades at 35.25 times forward 12-month sales, compared to an industry average of 7.04 times.

Zacks currently rates Rocket Lab a #2 (Buy), citing improving earnings estimates alongside the stock’s recent run. The consensus 2026 EPS estimate has risen 50% over the past 60 days.
