Samsung is in talks to invest around €1 billion in French AI startup Mistral, as part of a new funding round that could value the company at roughly €20 billion ($22.81 billion), according to a Financial Times report published Wednesday.

Reuters said it could not immediately verify the report.

The potential valuation would represent a sharp jump from the €11.7 billion valuation Mistral achieved during its €1.7 billion Series C round in September 2025 — nearly doubling in under a year.

Samsung Electronics stock (005930) was up 0.58% at the time of the report.

Mistral was founded in 2023 by former researchers from Google DeepMind and Meta. The Paris-based company develops large language models and AI platforms, and has built a reputation as Europe’s leading homegrown alternative to U.S. AI giants like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.

Microsoft Also Backing Mistral

Samsung is not the only major tech player deepening ties with Mistral. Microsoft has separately signed a partnership agreement with the startup, committing billions toward building and expanding computing facilities across Europe.

Microsoft distributes Mistral’s models through its Azure cloud platform, giving the startup access to one of the world’s largest enterprise customer bases.

In March, Mistral also raised $830 million in debt financing to fund the construction of data centers in France and Sweden.

Europe’s AI Push Gains Momentum

The talks come as European governments and companies push to develop AI infrastructure that is less dependent on U.S. technology.

Mistral has leaned into this positioning, presenting itself as a sovereign European AI option for businesses and governments.

Samsung’s reported €1 billion investment would be one of its largest bets on European AI to date.

The Financial Times report was published on July 22, 2026. Neither Samsung nor Mistral had issued an official statement at the time of writing.

Microsoft’s involvement with Mistral continues to grow, with the company already having committed to broader European AI infrastructure spending.
