Sara Bareilles is back on the Billboard charts this week with her latest album, one which fans waited quite a while to hear. The singer-songwriter returns with Good Grief, her seventh full-length. The set follows Amidst the Chaos by more than seven years, during which time Bareilles has been busy with a number of projects, especially in the theater industry.
Good Grief has not turned out to be one of the multi-talented artist’s biggest commercial wins, but on one chart managed by Billboard, it brings her to a new career high and into the most competitive tier for the very first time.
Sara Bareilles Charts Her First Vinyl Top 10
For the first time in her career, Bareilles breaks into the top 10 on the Vinyl Albums chart, which looks only at the top-selling titles on wax in the U.S. Good Grief barely manages to find its way into that region as it launches at No. 10.
Bareilles has only accrued two wins on the Vinyl Albums chart throughout her career. She first appeared on the tally in April 2019, when Amidst the Chaos debuted at No. 12. The album peaked in that position and slipped away only a few days later, never to be seen on the roster again.
Good Grief Debuts on Two More Billboard Charts
Good Grief launches on another two Billboard rankings this week in addition to the vinyl list. The latest from Bareilles debuts at No. 7 on the Top Album Sales chart and No. 35 on the Billboard 200.
Luminate reports that during its first tracking frame of availability, Bareilles’s new full-length moved 21,100 equivalent units. That figure incorporates both purchases and streams, and Good Grief sold 17,500 copies on CD, vinyl and digital download in seven days of availability.
Good Grief Marks a New Low for Sara Bareilles
Good Grief marks a new low for Bareilles on multiple rankings when looking specifically at her traditional studio albums. On the Top Album Sales chart, its No. 7 start matches What’s Inside: Songs from Waitress, which is built around tunes from the Broadway show Bareilles wrote and, for a time, starred in. That soundtrack of sorts – though it’s not the official cast recording – peaked at No. 8. The EP Once Upon Another Time also stalled in eighth place more than a decade ago.
On the Billboard 200, Good Grief becomes Bareilles’s first traditional studio album to miss the top 10. Only two of the singer’s charting projects have peaked in lower positions than where Good Grief enters: Brave Enough: Live at the Variety Playhouse and the iTunes Live from SoHo EP, which debuted and stalled at Nos. 66 and 107, respectively.
Sara Bareilles Scores Her Tenth Adult Pop Airplay Hit
Bareilles may not be the hitmaker she was when she first broke out with the single “Love Song,” but Good Grief does produce one charting win this frame. “Just a Kid,” featured on the full-length, debuts on the Adult Pop Airplay chart, though only barely. “Just a Kid” opens at No. 40, in last place on the radio ranking.
The single becomes Bareilles’s milestone tenth career appearance on the Adult Pop Airplay chart and her first new hit on the tally in more than seven years. At the same time, its No. 40 start marks a new career low for the Grammy winner on one of the three pop-focused radio rosters published each week by Billboard.
