The Wayans Bros.’ reboot of their Scary Movie franchise arrives on Paramount+ this week following a hugely successful run in theaters.
Directed by Michael Tiddes, Scary Movie — the sixth in the franchise that kicked off in 2000 — stars Damon Wayans Jr., Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Lochlyn Munro, Cheri Oteri and Chris Elliot. Like the previous installments in the franchise, Scary Movie spoofs notable horror movies past and present, including Scream (and its enduring character Ghostface), M3GAN, Terrifier, Get Out, Weapons, Longlegs, Sinners, and Terrifier, as well as the Netflix streaming hit Wednesday.
Scary Movie debuted in theaters on June 5 and screamed out of the gate with $54.5 million in ticket sales from 3,490 North American theaters in its first weekend frame. By the time Scary Movie wrapped up its domestic run on July 30, the film earned $108.2 million. Combined with its international take of $123 million, Scary Movie tallied up $231.2 million in global ticket sales against a $30 million production budget before marketing costs.
The box office success of Scary Movie made it the second-highest -grossing film in the franchise behind the 2000 original, which earned $277.2 million before inflation is factored in. The worldwide haul for the new Scary Movie bested the global takes of 2006’s Scary Movie 4 ($178.7 million), 2003’s Scary Movie 3 ($155.2 million), 2001’s Scary Movie 2 ($141.1 million and 2015’s Scary Movie V ($78.3 million).

The ‘Scary Movie’ Reboot Arrives On Paramount+ On Thursday
Since Scary Movie is a Paramount Pictures release, the film will make its streaming video on demand premiere on Paramount+. The film will begin streaming for subscribers on Thursday, Sept. 3.
Paramount+ has two subscription tiers. The ad-based Paramount+ Essential tier costs $8.99 per month, while the ad-free Paramount+ Premium costs $13.99 per month.
Scary Movie’s big box office numbers came despite a “rotten” critics’ score of 24% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer based on 136 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus reads, “Taking a stab at modern horror movies and missing more than it cuts, Scary Movie‘s self-referential callbacks and tired gags make for a stunted return to what was already a hit-or-miss franchise.”
Scary Movie fared much better with audiences on RT, as the film earned a 64% “fresh” score on the site’s Popcornmeter based on 5,000-plus reviews. Scary Movie’s Audience summary reads, “Laden with nostalgia and OG ribaldry, Scary Movie delivers stupid, good fun that’s appropriately inappropriate.”
