TLDR

  • Solana Alpenglow targets transaction finality of 150 milliseconds, compared with roughly six seconds under the current voting system.
  • The upgrade moves validator voting off-chain, potentially reducing reported transaction counts without reducing actual user activity.
  • Validators could save approximately 60% on voting costs through a new 0.8 SOL admission fee.
  • Developers completed a successful test migration after six network restarts and an earlier failed attempt.
  • The mainnet transition targets October 21 at slot 459,653,000, following a 5,000-slot transition period.

Solana Alpenglow approaches its planned launch on Wednesday, October 21, with changes to the blockchain’s voting system. The upgrade targets transaction finality near 150 milliseconds, compared with six seconds now.

Finality means a network can no longer reverse a transaction. The target would shorten waiting times for exchanges, trading firms, and payment applications, although mainnet performance remains unproven.

Solana Alpenglow Moves Validator Votes Off-Chain

Under the current system, validators submit votes as blockchain transactions and wait for enough approvals. Alpenglow uses a new protocol, Votor, to exchange those votes directly and combine them into certificates.

Each certificate records support from validators without filling blocks with individual votes. Solana price analysis tracks resistance around $107 to $108, although faster finality does not guarantee higher token prices.

Validators currently spend about 2 SOL daily to cast votes following shorter block intervals. The new admission ticket replaces vote charges with 0.8 SOL per epoch, roughly one day.

That represents a reduction of about 60% in voting expenses, although hardware and hosting charges remain. Validator earnings could change because block producers will no longer collect fees from those vote transactions.

Other developers are pursuing quicker payments. A Zcash upgrade planned for November would shorten block intervals from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, although its design differs from Solana’s change.

Testing Included Repeated Restarts

Galaxy Digital said the community test cluster restarted six times while developers tested the new system. About 100 operators participated, using different equipment and locations to expose problems.

One migration attempt failed across the test cluster, forcing operators to reverse the switch. Developers completed a successful migration, while test activity involved no real funds.

The mainnet rollout begins at epoch 1064. Existing voting rules remain active for another 5,000 slots before Alpenglow takes over at slot 459,653,000. The activation time can move.

Faster settlement has attracted attention beyond public blockchains. This week’s JPM Coin expansion to Ethereum brought tokenized bank deposits to another network, allowing eligible institutions to transfer funds around the clock.
