Solana has unveiled a major transaction upgrade that gives developers more flexibility with on-chain applications. The network has reportedly increased the maximum transaction size from 1,232 bytes to an impressive 4,096 bytes. This allows developers to fit more instructions into a single transaction instead of breaking complex operations into several parts.

Solana raises transaction size limit to 4,096 bytes

The Solana blockchain has tripled the amount of data that can be included in a single transaction. As per the new Transaction V1 format, the limit has increased to 4,096 bytes from the previous 1,232 bytes. Thus, the developers can now handle complex onchain transactions and operations easily. They can fit more data into a single transaction without splitting it into multiple sections.

Reportedly, the update became live on Tuesday at 01:00 UTC. With this move, the blockchain intends to remove a long-standing limitation rather than making the network process more transactions per second. Previously, developers were required to keep operations small or limited to 1,232 bytes. Now, this limitation is reduced, with developers able to execute more steps and complicated transactions easily.

Solana looks to close the gap with Ethereum

Interestingly, Solana’s latest update helps the blockchain to compete more closely with the rival, Ethereum, especially in handling complex on-chain activity. Although Solana allows faster transactions at lower fees, its initial byte limit was a major barrier for developers. With only 1,232 bytes, developers were not able to fit larger data into a transaction.

Ethereum, on the other hand, follows a different model. This makes it free from the Solana-like fixed transaction limit. The blockchain uses a block gas limit to control block activity. This helps developers to have more flexibility to handle larger and complex operations.

Now, Solana has increased the size to 4,096, making it more flexible for developers to carry out transactions. This makes Solana a key rival to Ethereum, as developers could execute bigger transactions in a single transaction at lower fees. Ethereum users still have to pay higher fees for similar transactions.

Developers get more space, but apps need updates

Significantly, Solana’s decision to increase the transaction size gives developers more room to combine instructions into a single operation. Thus, they can do complex tasks more easily, including all steps together. The update could also help maintain consistency, as the entire transaction could be rolled back if one part of the operation fails.

However, the upgrade also provides some tasks for wallets, trading platforms, and blockchain data providers. These services are also required to upgrade to recognize Solana’s new V1 transaction format. Only then can they read and process the updated transactions properly.

As warned by the Solana Foundation, outdated services can face significant issues while retrieving individual V1 transactions. In some cases, even a request for a full block could fail if that block involves a V1 transaction. But this is mainly a compatibility issue rather than a major network problem. They simply need to update their existing systems to recognize and process the V1 transactions.
