The Solana Foundation has announced a new post-quantum signature update to address the emerging threat. Its core developer teams have independently selected the Falcon regime as the preferred choice for this move. The 7th largest cryptocurrency network by market capitalization is looking to implement quantum-proofing ahead of the timeline proposed by Google and other leading researchers in this field.

The tool is initially available for testing through its Firedancer and Solana-sdk repositories. 

Solana Takes the Lead in Quantum-Proofing

The Solana Foundation is taking an early lead in dealing with the incoming quantum challenge with the Falcon upgrade. Quantum computers pose a highly debated, yet probable, theoretical threat to today’s blockchain cryptography. Elliptic cryptography regimes like Ed25519–the standard used by Solana–are likely to be rendered obsolete by these powerful computers and therefore, the network, like other digital currency systems, has to look for a quantum-proofing standard. 

Solana currently has two independent teams that help validate the Solana blockchain and its proposed upgrades. Both have concluded that the Solana chain requires a post-quantum update with compact signatures, which would allow the network to maintain its high transactional capability for its users. Both groups are heavily involved in testing the proposed Falcon migration, which adds credibility to the process.

What is the Falcon Digital Signature Scheme?

Falcon is a lattice-based digital signature algorithm that has been shortlisted by NIST alongside Dilithium and SPHINCS+ regimes. Solana has chosen the former because of its distinct advantage of offering a large number of transactions, which the network is known for in the crypto world. 

Falcon’s signatures are just 690 bytes, compared to 2-4 KB offered by Dilithium and even larger ones offered by other alternatives. The small size is crucial to SOL’s high-network-throughput design. Firedancer has tested that an optimized implementation of Falcon can make the network 2-3x faster than current elliptic-curve cryptographic alternatives. 

The Roadmap Ahead

While Solana is zeroing in on the Falcon algorithm, this is not a final decision by the Foundation, as it continues to test other alternatives alongside the current preference. Solana executives have stated that no changes are required today or in the near term, and performance impact is projected to be negligible.

The larger Solana ecosystem is bracing for the quantum D-Day well in advance. In addition to adopting a quantum-proof encryption standard, firms are already developing quantum-resistant tools.
