Solana has overtaken Base in x402 transaction count and volume for the first time, according to Artemis data displayed by SolanaFloor on Sept. 3. The network processed more than 90% of x402 transactions in the latest week, highlighting its growing role in stablecoin payments between applications and AI agents.

90% of x402 Transactions Shift to Solana From Base in 2026

Artemis data shows x402 activity surged on Solana in the week ending Aug. 31. SOL moved ahead of Base in both transaction count and volume. The combined lead matters because transaction counts can be inflated by tiny payments, while volume offers a second measure of activity.

The shift changes the competitive picture for x402, which previously had been concentrated on Base. SOL’s share had been rising as developers tested automated payments. The latest result points to settlement activity, although a single weekly reading cannot establish a durable trend.

Solana’s 90% x402 Share Reflects Rising AI Agent Payments

x402, developed by Coinbase, uses HTTP’s 402 payment status to enable programmatic stablecoin payments. Coinbase says the protocol lets AI agents and applications pay for APIs, content and other services. Its documentation supports multiple networks, including SOL and Base.

SOL’s infrastructure is suited to frequent payments because settlement is fast and transaction costs are low. Google Cloud’s Rich Widmann said, “Solana was the right choice for settlement,” in a May 2026 announcement. The comment reflects the network’s relevance to machine-to-machine commerce, where small payments may occur repeatedly.

Solana’s 2026 x402 Lead Could Support Stablecoin Utility

The development could strengthen SOL’s position as a settlement layer for stablecoins and AI services. More genuine x402 usage would support payment infrastructure, wallets and facilitators around the network. SOL says its x402 activity has processed more than 35 million transactions and $10 million in volume since launching on the network.

However, higher x402 activity should not be treated as direct evidence of stronger SOL demand. Payments are generally settled in stablecoins, so transaction growth does not automatically create equivalent buying pressure for SOL. The stronger signal is recurring commercial use by agents, applications and businesses.

SOL Faces a 2026 Test as x402 Adoption Expands Further

The next test is consistency across several weeks, not one spike in activity. SOL must show that its rising transaction count represents organic economic demand and that payment volume remains durable. Base remains a significant x402 venue, while Coinbase describes the protocol as multi-network.

For users, developers and investors, the key takeaway is that x402 is becoming a payment rail for blockchain networks. SOL’s latest lead improves its position. Sustained volume, repeat users and real commercial payments will determine whether the advantage lasts over time.
