  • nder Anatoly Yakovenko stated that the development of Alpenglow could have been completed in half the time through a simpler modification to the voting program.
  • The migration scheduled for October 21 removes vote transactions from blocks and replaces individual fees with an admission fee of 0.8 SOL burned per epoch.
  • The Alpenglow governance proposal recorded a 98.27% approval rate of the votes cast in September 2025, with participation representing 52% of the total stake.

Anatoly Yakovenko, co-founder of Solana, publicly questioned the development timeline of the Alpenglow upgrade, arguing that a direct modification to the vote program would have cut the process in half. His remarks coincide with the start of the consensus migration scheduled for Wednesday, October 21.

The structural modification will formally remove individual voting transactions from the network’s blocks. Market analyst reports reveal that this type of operation historically accounted for roughly 75% of total blockspace on Solana.

The new framework moves voting activity off the main chain. Technical documentation from Anza specifies that validators will adopt aggregated BLS certificates, eliminating the continuous recording of individual votes as standard transactions.

Operationally, removing these records will lower nominal transactions per second (TPS) metrics reported by public explorers. Technical sources across the industry note that this numerical decline does not reflect a drop in actual economic activity from network users.

The shift also redefines the recurring cost structure for validator nodes. Instead of paying fees for every vote cast in each block, operators will take on a flat admission fee of 0.8 SOL per epoch, which will be burned by the protocol.

This technical transition aims to drastically cut final confirmation times. Data from infrastructure firms like Helius and Alchemy indicate that finality time is expected to drop from 12.8 seconds to a range between 100 and 150 milliseconds.

Despite the technical milestones announced, Yakovenko expressed reservations regarding the engineering effort invested. The developer maintained that a narrower redesign of the original vote program would have achieved similar operational goals without stretching the implementation timeline.

Technical Migration Parameters and Governance

The transition process incorporates strict safeguards across the epoch boundary. According to Anza’s documentation, the migration boundary will trigger 5,000 slots after the initial activation of feature flags, a period during which blocks will temporarily process only votes to secure a seamless handover.

Infrastructure operators must adhere to rigorous software requirements. The Solana Foundation detailed in its guidelines that validators require version 4.3.2 of compatible clients such as Agave, Jito-Solana, or Harmonic Salsa.

Alternative implementations will not participate in this immediate transition. Official documentation confirms that the Firedancer and Franken Dancer clients are not enabled to run during the critical consensus handover window.

The network’s time tracking will maintain its current format. Developer manuals specify that the on-chain clock will preserve whole-second precision and that timestamps calculated during transaction execution will continue to be treated as approximations.

RPC node synchronization could see temporary variations. Market reporting indicates that certain RPC infrastructure providers might record finality updates with minor delays relative to the 150-millisecond technical target.

Institutional support for the protocol was formalized earlier through decentralized voting. Records from the ballot closed in September 2025 certify that the technical proposal passed with 98.27% affirmative support among votes cast.

During that election process, 52% of the total staked SOL supply formally participated in the consensus change referendum. Ecosystem analysts describe the outcome as one of the most widely supported governance mandates in the network’s history.

The mainnet deployment enters its final operational phase this October 21, marking the start of the transition into the 5,000-slot crossover window.
