  • Strategy, BlackRock, Coinbase, and other major firms launched the Bitcoin Security Consortium.
  • Founding members pledged a combined $15 million over the next three years.
  • The funding will support Bitcoin developers, researchers, and security organizations.
  • Mike Schmidt of Brink will coordinate the Consortium’s daily activities as a volunteer.
  • Each member will independently decide how to distribute its financial support.
  • The Consortium will not control Bitcoin development or direct protocol changes.

Strategy joined BlackRock, Coinbase, Fidelity Digital Assets, Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, Block, Blockstream, and Galaxy to launch the Bitcoin Security Consortium. The new initiative will support the long-term security of the Bitcoin network through coordinated funding and public education. Members have pledged a combined $15 million over the next three years to support developers, researchers, and organizations working on Bitcoin security.

Bitcoin Security Consortium Begins With Broad Industry Support

The Bitcoin Security Consortium brings together companies from different parts of the Bitcoin industry. The founding members include asset managers, exchanges, custodians, infrastructure providers, payment companies, and long-term Bitcoin holders.

The group said it will focus on supporting existing security work without directing Bitcoin’s development. Each participating company will decide independently how to distribute its funding to developers, researchers, and nonprofit organizations involved in Bitcoin security.

The Consortium’s daily coordination will be handled by Mike Schmidt, executive director of Brink. Brink is a nonprofit organization that funds and supports open-source Bitcoin developers, and Schmidt will serve the Consortium in a volunteer role.

$15 Million Funding Will Support Bitcoin Security Research

The founding members have pledged a combined $15 million over the next three years. The money will support ongoing security research and developer work that already exists within the Bitcoin ecosystem.

According to the announcement, the Consortium will not control how Bitcoin evolves. Instead, it aims to provide financial support while allowing the decentralized development process to continue through the global community of contributors.

Strategy Chief Executive Officer Phong Le said, “As long-term holders, we have every incentive to see Bitcoin remain secure for generations. Funding the people who do this work, and helping inform the conversation around it, is a natural way for us to contribute.”

The Consortium also said it plans to become a reliable source of information for investors, the public, and the media regarding Bitcoin security efforts.

Members Say Bitcoin Development Will Remain Independent

The Consortium stated that its structure follows the model used by many industries that support open-source software projects. It will contribute funding and raise awareness without directing technical decisions or protocol changes.

The organization said Bitcoin development will continue to be managed by its decentralized community of developers. It also stated that it does not represent Bitcoin or speak on behalf of Bitcoin Core contributors.

Robert Mitchnick, Global Head of Digital Assets at BlackRock, said, “Bitcoin Core developers do incredibly important work, and we’re pleased that our firm and the others in this group will now be making substantial additional funding available to support Bitcoin’s long-term security needs.”

The Consortium said one of the areas receiving support will be research related to quantum computing. It noted that large-scale quantum computers capable of breaking Bitcoin’s cryptography do not exist today.

The announcement added that researchers believe such technology remains years away. Even so, developers are already working on post-quantum security methods, and the Consortium plans to help fund that research while providing factual information about its progress.
