Target Corp. stock fell 2.25% on Monday as investors took some profits ahead of the retailer’s second-quarter earnings report. Weakening US consumer spending only added to caution around the stock.

The pullback comes after US retail sales unexpectedly fell 0.6% in July, their largest monthly decline since May of 2025 and the first drop in nine months. Economists expected a 0.1% increase.

Non-store retail sales fell 2.2%, while control-group sales, which feed into GDP calculations, declined 0.4%.

Target Earnings Put the 2026 Rally to the Test

The softer consumer backdrop raises the stakes for Target’s Q2 results on Wednesday morning. Wall Street expects revenue of roughly $26.15 billion, up about 4% year over year, with earnings of around $2.31 per share. Comparable sales are expected to increase about 2.6%.

Investors could also be in for a sizable move. Options pricing implies Target shares could swing roughly 7% in either direction following earnings. That volatility comes after TGT stock surged more than 50% in 2026 as investors bought into CEO Michael Fiddelke’s turnaround strategy.

There are already signs the turnaround is gaining traction. Target reported first-quarter net sales of $25.4 billion, up 6.7%, while comparable sales rose 5.6% and digital comparable sales jumped 8.9%. The company also raised its 2026 sales outlook to growth of around 4% and expects earnings near the high end of its previous $7.50-$8.50-per-share range.

Target has also been leaning on high-profile product collaborations, including Pokémon, LoveShackFancy and Hollister to drive traffic and differentiate its merchandise.

Wall Street is still divided, however. Bank of America maintains an Underperform rating with a $124 price target, while other firms have turned more optimistic as Target’s operating performance improves.

With consumers showing signs of becoming more cautious and expectations rising after Target’s sharp stock rally, Wednesday’s earnings report could determine whether TGT has more room to run or whether the turnaround is already reflected in its share price.
