Tether AI Research has launched a set of open-source translation models that work without an internet connection. The models are built for smartphones and laptops and cover languages spoken across Africa and Europe.
The tools run locally on a device rather than relying on cloud services. That means users can translate text even when an internet connection is unavailable.
Tether’s TranslatePsy-AfriSLM covers 19 African languages. AfriNano supports eight, while EuroNano supports nine European languages.
Tether Targets Language Barriers
AfriSLM uses about 800 million parameters, yet testing showed it could outperform several larger translation models. Tether also developed a filtering method that removes up to 96% of low-quality training data.

The company said the models could support education, healthcare, agriculture and humanitarian work. Tether also sees potential applications alongside QVAC MedPsy, its healthcare-focused AI model.
European Models Cut Storage Needs
EuroNano supports 90 translation directions by using English as an intermediary language. Its smallest version requires just 36 megabytes of storage, compared with about 633 megabytes for a comparable Firefox offline translation setup.
Tether says the model cuts storage requirements by about 94%.
The AI release comes as Tether faces separate legal pressure in the US. Two Thai businessmen sued the company over 42.4 million USDT that they allege was frozen before authorities obtained a seizure warrant.
