On Saturday, October 17, 2026, Bitcoin.com reported that Thai police arrested a Chinese national accused of running a transnational criminal network that used cryptocurrency to launder illicit money.

The suspect, identified as Wu Chaoshuai, was taken into custody in Bangkok following an investigation that involved several Thai immigration police officials. Police said he was found living in a luxury house in the city’s Ramkhamhaeng area.

Chinese authorities allege that Wu acted as an account mule for the organization. They say he recruited other people to open bank accounts and cryptocurrency exchange accounts, which were used to hide and move illegal funds. Wu reportedly managed 133 accounts and handled more than $74 million in transactions.

According to the Thai Immigration Police’s third division, Wu entered Thailand on a tourist visa in December 2019 and stayed after it expired. Investigators believe he remained in the country to avoid passing through immigration checks, where officials could have arranged his extradition to China. His visa had been expired for more than three years when he was arrested.

Thai media reported that Wu moved frequently to evade detection, renting houses and luxury condominiums in different communities rather than staying in one place for long. He also reportedly changed the color of his car, used fake license plates, and relied on forged documents.

Wu will be charged with overstaying his visa. Thai police said they will coordinate with Chinese authorities regarding his extradition.

The arrest comes as Thai authorities have stepped up oversight of cryptocurrency activity and related crimes. In June, the Department of Special Investigation dismantled a crypto mining money laundering operation that reportedly laundered more than $300 million a year from online scams and gambling platforms.
