The famed LGM-30G Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile system that forms a key pillar of the U.S. strategic nuclear triad is aging out of service, prompting the U.S. Air Force to speed replacement efforts that require scrapping 600 existing facilities across five states and laying over 5,000 miles of fiber optic cables to create modern infrastructure.
This week, the Air Force assembled the Minuteman’s replacement, the Sentinel LGM-35A. It is the latest move in a series of rapid efforts to field new nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles, or ICBMs, as current missiles become obsolete.
The Fastest Leg Of The Nuclear Triad

The U.S. nuclear triad consists of three elements, commonly called legs, with which the nation can deter and deliver nuclear strikes. These include sea-launched, air-launched and ground-launched nuclear weapons delivered by ballistic missile submarines, or SSBNs, bomber aircraft, and ICBMs.
ICBMs enable the U.S. to launch nuclear missiles from land at enemies across continents to deter a nuclear surprise attack. While submarines form the triad’s stealthiest leg, the ICBMs are arguably its fastest since they can be launched en masse quickly – at least in theory.
The U.S. depends on a fleet of 400 Minuteman III ICBMs as its ground-based nuclear deterrent. Although the Air Force regularly tests ICBMs to ensure their effectiveness, with a recent test occurring in March, the Minuteman system is well past its expiration date.

The Minuteman III was first fielded in 1970 as the third generation of a missile family first developed in the late 1950s. The Minuteman III was originally intended to have a service life of 10 years. It has remained in use since 1970 and is currently the U.S. ground-based nuclear deterrent today.
The missiles are stored in hardened silos to protect them from attack and are connected to underground launch facilities. During the Cold War, they remained in a constant state of readiness. They were designed to be fired by airmen using two launch keys on the sole authorization of the U.S. president.
The Minuteman III is now extremely outdated– so much that the Air Force opted to scrap not only the missile itself but all launch and silo facilities rather than upgrade them.
“The decision to build new silos…avoids the unpredictable costs and safety hazards of excavating and retrofitting 450 unique structures built over 50 years ago, and is a prime example of choosing a path that delivers capability with greater speed and less risk,” the service announced.
Can We Replace ICBMs At Speed?

Its replacement is the Sentinel LGM-35A, a fully modern ICBM system manufactured by Northrop Grumman that can be launched from unmanned sites.
The Sentinel, which was first vertically assembled this week, is equipped with improved guidance technology and can hit targets at greater range than the Minuteman. It features open architecture to allow the military to modify it as technology changes over time.
Replacing the entire Minuteman system with the Sentinel requires the U.S. to create a brand new land-based nuclear deterrent while keeping the old one in suitable condition to meet national defense needs.
Yet progress has been years in the making and slow in coming. The Government Accountability Office described the effort as a “megaproject” that is “years behind schedule and proving far costlier than expected.”
The Air Force reported to Congress in 2021 that the Minuteman III would effectively expire in 2036.
However, the Minuteman’s already overstretched service life may drag on. As of February 2026, the watchdog noted that, “As a result of delays to Sentinel, the Air Force may need to operate Minuteman III through 2050, 14 years longer than planned.”
Getting The Sentinel Ready

The Air Force has moved swiftly in recent months to make progress.
Last fall, the service shuttered the first Minuteman III silo, taking it offline, and successfully assembled the first Sentinel three-stage ground test missile.
The service has also begun construction on new missile silos and Wing Command Centers. In March, the Air Force cut the ribbon on a new 26,000-square-foot facility at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming for its Sentinel task force, Detachment 10, to speed up efforts.
The service is phasing out Vietnam War-era helicopters and deploying modernized MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopters to guard U.S. nuclear missiles and launch sites.
In July, the Air Force held a “golden shovel” groundbreaking ceremony in Nebraska to launch the construction of an enormous fiber optic cable network system to support the Sentinel launch sites.

In the meantime, the Minuteman is still at play. Until Sentinel is ready, the U.S. must make the Cold War system last to ensure the nation still has viable nuclear missiles in place.
Will the increasingly ancient Minuteman stand the test of time? The system could potentially last until 2050, according to the GAO.
However, extending its life comes with the risk of chemical degradation, according to an analysis the watchdog published in September 2025.
“Air Force officials told us that although they are confident that Minuteman III can be used beyond 2030, even out to 2050, they acknowledged there are unknowns such as ground electrical subsystems and electronics—for example, diodes, resistors, and capacitors—which could degrade to unacceptable levels.”
Last month, the issue of harmful chemicals present on aging Minuteman equipment came to the fore after an airman was exposed to toxic residue on an AN/PRM-10 test kit used to test Minuteman III communication systems. The residue contained polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, which were commonly present in equipment developed to maintain the ICBMs that is now outdated.
The Air Force Global Strike Command directed units to stop using the kits. Airmen are transitioning to use a modern PCB-free substitute kit as safety measure. The service noted that it is working to identify other Minuteman III test equipment that may contain harmful PCB chemicals.
Why Modernization Should Be A Priority

While the Air Force is undoubtedly making great strides in getting a new and more effective ICBM defense system into the field, the measure is long overdue.
Delays in previous years have snowballed into a strategic disadvantage for a core element of the U.S. nuclear triad, creating reliance on an outdated weapons system.
The pressing need to retire the Minuteman underscores the importance of continuous modernization and flexibility in maintaining military strength. Fielding new technology has become a vital component of global strategic dominance.
