Over time, Australia has evolved into a highly digital entertainment market where gaming, mobile technology, online payments, and cryptocurrencies are all becoming common parts of everyday life. One of the main benefits of this digital transformation is that players are now able to easily switch between a variety of different forms of interactive entertainment, whether playing on consoles, mobiles, competing in esports, playing card games, or other similar activities – all while not being constrained by a single device or a physical location.

The Interactive Games & Entertainment Association (IGEA) disclosed that 2025 video game expenditures by Australians amounted to more than 4.2 billion AUD, a 12% increase relative to the previous year. It is estimated that about 32.2% of Australian video gamblers mainly use their mobile devices to play games, while only 20% of gaming sales were through mobile. Spending on video games via the Internet or online was a little over 1.4 billion AUD.

Digital Gaming Has Become Part of the New Normal in Australian Entertainment

Australia’s popularity of online poker fits into a much wider change in how Australians enjoy gaming. The game of poker is perfectly suitable for a digital entertainment environment where computers, smartphones, and tablets enable one to play games without considering the fact that one has to get to a single physical place to entertain or amuse oneself. Just like the convenience of mobile games and other online gaming formats, being able to join online poker in Australia, at any time, is just as convenient as playing on one’s own device wherever one desires.

Video games are found in 89% of Australian households, according to a study by the Interactive Games & Entertainment Association (IGEA) and Bond University. That number is strong evidence that gaming in Australia is hardly a subculture.

In addition to their diversity, players are quite a mixed bunch. Based on the IGEA data, gaming is not limited by age; both parents, family members, and older Australians are all engaged in gaming activities. This audience diversity has encouraged gaming providers to make platforms accessible to users with different abilities, with easy-to-navigate interfaces, short loading times, and compatibility across multiple screens.

Mobile Gaming Has Been the Driving Force Behind the Digital Transformation

Smartphones have had a greater impact on how people can access games on virtually any day throughout the year than any other device.

A console is no longer needed to play a game. While the rest of the world is going digital, we live in a world where everyone is connected through devices they can switch on and off. Gaming has become the latest trend where people can get in and out of it whenever they feel like it, for instance, in between a commute or when they are at home relaxing.

According to IGEA’s 2025 report on consumer sales, mobile games have gained a significant share of market attention. Mobile game sales topped AU$1.7 billion, and mobile has become the largest game category in the Australian market.

A few factors helped the mobile gaming industry grow:

  • No launch delays let players start playing almost anytime
  • Cloud accounts let players keep their progress across multiple devices
  • Social features provide platforms where friends and like-minded groups gather
  • Buying extra items digitally is easy because of the convenience
  • Mobile payment options make purchasing much easier for customers

This evolution is creating an entertainment environment where ease has become as important as the entertainment itself.

Australians Are Already Comfortable With Digital Payment Systems

Gaming is just one of the activities that is becoming increasingly digital in Australia. People’s shopping and spending habits are changing rapidly too.

Cards accounted for 76% of consumer payments in Australia in 2022, according to the Reserve Bank of Australia’s Consumer Payments Survey, compared with only 26% in 2007. The survey also found that 94% of in-the-street card payments were contactless.

Consumer habits are still strongly tied to electronic payments, according to more recent Reserve Bank findings in 2026.

This may matter a lot to gaming companies, as their players are already familiar with handling money-related tasks on the same devices they use for entertainment. This convenience factor may be a major reason people don’t change their habits. It helps businesses reduce transaction friction, save time, and do more. In contrast, customers become more satisfied because they can get better deals and spend their money whenever and wherever they wish.

Cryptocurrency is Just Another Digitization of the Payment

Cryptocurrency is further reinforcing Australians’ digital payment habits by offering another way for online transactions instead of sticking with traditional payment mechanisms.

The number of Aussies who own cryptocurrency (3.3 million), according to data published by Finder’s Australia report on cryptocurrency, includes Bitcoin held by the majority (51%) of this cohort.

Another Finder consumer research report found that 5.6 million Aussies either owned cryptographic tokens/coins or intended to. Moreover, 67 percent of respondents who had already engaged in cryptocurrency trading said they do so monthly.

The reason that crypto can be an attractive mode of payment for gamers is mainly that it shares a lot of the qualities of their favorite platforms already:

  • They are set up for use over the web
  • Transactions can be controlled digitally
  • An owner of one service or a user of different services compatible with the same cryptocurrency wallet can switch between them easily (a so-called “one-click” transaction)
  • A gamer can manage funds without leaving the digital environment

Gaming and crypto are becoming a familiar pair that grows stronger each day.
