HBO Max’s The Pitt has won its second Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, held tonight at the Peacock Theater in Downtown Los Angeles.
“We are so grateful and so humbled to be here among all of the nominees, not just in our category, but in all the categories as well as our colleagues from last weekend’s Creative Arts celebrations,” says creator and executive producer R. Scott Gemmill. “We are just so grateful to be in this business. It brings hundreds of people to put on a TV show, as you well know, and we are so blessed to have the most talented and passionate cast and crew, and I know it’s not just our show. I know your shows are the same. You feel the same way about your people because we are so blessed to live in this community, [and the] best part of this job is the people we get to work with every day.”
Gemmill was joined by executive producers John Wells and Wyle, who won the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series award earlier, and the series’ cast.
Gemmill touched on the work of real-life heroes in the emergency department and health care, and how they try to tell their stories as authentically as possible. He says, “We just want to shine a light on them. Yes, their stories can be frustrating and heartbreaking, but they also can be so inspirational.”
He also talks about the actors and those who are part of the series and industry in general: “We are entertainers. We make you laugh. We make you cry. Occasionally, we make you look away in disgust. But when I look around this room, I see something more important than rewards and the ratings. I see the whole community that is still trying to do the right thing. It is so hard to tell what is real and what we can’t believe anymore, which makes telling honest stories about real human struggles so much more important. What you do changes people’s lives, and I’m just so happy that we get to do that because it’s so difficult to know what to believe anymore.”

Created by Gemmill and executive produced by Wells and Wyle, the medical series was a favorite to win the award for its realistic and thought-provoking portrayal of doctors, nurses, and medical staff in an underfunded Pittsburgh emergency room over the course of a single day. Each episode covers an hour of the day, following the medical professionals in real time as they manage the reality of the ER and its patients. The series takes place after the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath. Gemmill, Wells, and Wyle previously worked together on the 1994 Emmy Award-winning series E.R.
Gemmill concluded his speech, “When the last bastion of reality is our shared collective fiction, that makes what you do so much more important. People need to know the truth, and we need to continue to tell them that – in whatever way we can. Because at the end of the day, storytelling sometimes allows us to understand and appreciate each other. Keep doing what you want.”
Last year, The Pitt won five of its 13 Emmy nominations for its first season, including the grand prize for Outstanding Drama Series. Now, in its second season, the series received 25 nominations and won five awards.

The Pitt joins six other series that have won the Primetime Emmy Award for Drama in their first and second seasons: Hill Street Blues, Picket Fences, The West Wing, Mad Men, CBS’ Mission: Impossible (then called Outstanding Dramatic Series) and The Defenders (then called Outstanding Program Achievement in the Field of Drama).
Earlier this evening, Wyle took home the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of the burnt-out ER doctor, Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch.
During the Creative Emmy Awards last weekend, the series took home four awards, including Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup, Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for Ernest Harden Jr., Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, and Outstanding Casting For A Drama Series.
The other nominees included The Diplomat, The Gilded Age, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Paradise, Pluribus, Slow Horses, and Your Friends & Neighbors.
The Pitt’s third season is currently in production and is set to release in January 2027 on HBO Max.
