Anthropic has suspended access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after receiving a US government export control directive linked to national security concerns. The company said the order applies to foreign nationals globally and disputes the rationale behind the action. Anthropic maintains its safeguards remain effective and is working to restore access as quickly as possible.
US Government Orders Model Suspension
The US government has directed Anthropic to suspend access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 artificial intelligence models under national security export control authorities.
The order requires the company to block access for all foreign nationals, whether they are located inside or outside the United States. The restriction also extends to foreign national employees at Anthropic.
Following the directive, Anthropic disabled both models for all customers to ensure compliance. The company stated that access to its other AI models remains unchanged.
Anthropic said it received the order at 5:21 p.m. Eastern Time and moved quickly to implement the required restrictions.
The company also noted that the US government did not provide detailed information explaining the national security concerns that led to the action.
Anthropic believes the decision is linked to reports of a potential method for bypassing, or jailbreaking, the safeguards built into Fable 5.

Anthropic Challenges Security Concerns
Anthropic examined a demonstration of the alleged jailbreak method and discovered that it revealed very few new vulnerabilities.
They termed the discovery minor and said that other public AI systems could detect such vulnerabilities without needing to circumvent security measures. The company mentioned that the game Fable 5 had undergone rigorous testing before its release.
The firm mentioned that the testing was done for thousands of hours by the US Government, the UK Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute, private organizations, and their own teams.
Anthropic admits that no hacker has ever discovered a universal jailbreak that will help bypass any cybersecurity mechanisms.
However, they agree that absolute impermeability cannot be achieved by any artificial intelligence company, since industry mechanisms can also be violated somehow.
Defense Strategy and Industry Implications
According to Anthropic, Fable 5 employs a defense-in-depth strategy for minimizing jailbreaks and thus making them difficult or expensive to design.
Monitoring was also included to enable rapid detection and response to the attack. Moreover, customer data is kept for 30 days to enable research and mitigation.
According to Anthropic, the case of the government involves only the verbal evidence concerning a restricted form of jailbreak.
According to the company, such abilities have been present in many AI applications currently in use currently by the cybersecurity professionals.
Although the company agrees to follow the guidelines provided in the order, it believes that such action may lead to negative precedents in the future. The company will provide more information on the matter.
