U.S. Wholesale Inflation Hits 6.3% as Fed Rate Bets Face a Reckoning

America’s inflation headache just gained another complication. U.S. producer prices climbed 6.3% annually in September, with wholesale costs jumping 1.3% in a single month—the sharpest monthly increase since March 2022.

The Oct. 15 report arrived barely 24 hours after consumer inflation exceeded expectations, handing Federal Reserve policymakers another uncomfortable set of numbers. Yet prediction market traders aren’t rushing to embrace another rate hike.

Gasoline Prices Deliver a 20.3% Shock

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that final demand goods prices advanced 2.6%, their largest monthly increase since the series began in December 2009.

“Prices for final demand goods advanced 2.6% in September, the largest increase since data were first calculated in December 2009,” the Bureau of Labor report states. “Over 80% of the broad-based rise in September is attributable to the index for final demand energy, which jumped 10.8%. Prices for final demand foods and for final demand goods less foods and energy advanced 1.2% and 0.3%, respectively.”

Services weren’t spared. Prices advanced 0.8%, including a 3.4% increase in transportation and warehousing costs. The figures followed Wednesday’s consumer price index (CPI), which showed annual inflation reaching 3.7%, up from August’s 3.4%.

Retail Spending Slows as Inflation Accelerates

Another economic release complicated the picture. September retail sales increased 0.8%, slowing from August’s 1.3% advance. Because those figures aren’t adjusted for inflation, the spending slowdown raises questions about consumers’ purchasing power as businesses confront higher input costs. The producer price index also feeds into calculations of the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation measure, the personal consumption expenditures price index.

Polymarket Traders Still Favor a Fed Pause

Despite the inflation doubleheader, Polymarket’s October Fed decision market showed traders assigning a 72% probability to unchanged rates and 28% to a quarter-point increase. The market had attracted nearly $41.5 million in trading volume by publication time.

The Fed raised its benchmark rate to 3.75% to 4% in September, making the Oct. 27-28 meeting particularly consequential. The contradiction is difficult to miss. Wholesale inflation is running at its hottest annual pace since December 2022, but traders still expect policymakers to sit tight.

Bitcoin’s price took exception to the second inflation reading, slipping below $81,000 following the report after touching an intraday low of $80,154 on Bitstamp hours earlier. The leading cryptocurrency has surrendered 3.4% today and 4% over the past fortnight. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ back-to-back inflation reports handed the bears fresh ammunition and a decisive advantage.
